A Tale of Two Americas pg. 17 America is growing. Last week we saw discussed how America received a lot of land from the war it had with Mexico. Some of this land included the future states of Kansas and Nebraska, and as we saw last week, there was a lot of violence between people who moved to those states. The violence was between northerners and southerners, why was their so much hate between these two groups? Ever since America was created in the late 1700’s there has always been two different versions of it. A Free America….the North and a Slave America….the South. But how did America develop into two different versions and not one single version? This week we find out.

The South pg. 17 When America became America it was just 13 states. These 13 states were split into two regions and these two regions would continue to struggle for power until 1865, when one of them would finally defeat the other. The first region we will examine today is the southern region of the United States of America. The southern states of America in the 1800s include: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Let’s take a look at the Geography, Climate, and economy of these southern states: Examine the map and answer the questions.

The southern way of making money! Pg.18 Sadly in the world we live in money is very important to human survival. Money is used to buy everything we need for survival besides air. The southern states of America had a very simple economy, simple but very, very strong. They made their money doing mainly one thing. The Southern economy: During and after the colonial period the South specialized in an agricultural economy. Crops=$$$ Prices for southern crops—tobacco, rice, and indigo—fell after the American Revolution. Cotton replaced them as the big money maker. Sadly cotton was hard to produce, but someone changed that with a simple invention!!
6
pg. 21 Because of Mr. Whitney and his cotton gin the South boomed! New types of cotton helped spread production through the South, creating a cotton belt. The United States produced more than half the cotton grown in the world by 1840. The cotton boom attracted new settlers, built up wealth among white southerner slave owners, and helped port cities grow. But to grow all this cotton and to farm all the land the South needed a large workforce. They had two options pay people to work, cutting into the profits OR use slaves, save money and grow wealthier……they chose the slaves! Because of the Cotton boom an increase in the American slave trade occurred and America’s slave population went from 700,000 in 1776 to 4 million slaves in 1860.

A Tale of Two Americas pg. 23 America is growing.

The North pg. 23 The second region we will look at is the Northern states of America include. This region includes the following states: Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Nevada, and Oregon. Just like with the south let us examine the Northern geography, climate, and economy.
11
pg. 24 So like the Americans today, people who lived back then had to work to make a living. The North focused very heavily on factories and manufacturing. Meaning they made a lot of things in factories like clothing, shoes, farming equipment, everything! Factories are huge businesses that need a lot of workers, but unlike the South the northern factories did not use slaves, instead they employed free labor. This meant they hired all of their workers and paid them money to work. Slavery ended in 1804 in NORTHERN states only, so this prevented anyone from owning slaves in the North. By the time factories started popping up, slavery was illegal. SKIP THE RANDOM QUESTION.
12
pg. 24 Factories that were found in the North did not employee slaves, instead they employed free workers, basically people who chose to work there. Lets take a look at the two people who were responsible for the rise of factories in Northern America COMPLETE THE CHART PN PAGE 25 USING BARAKATS LAIRS GO TO THE WEBSITE AND CLICK WORKBOOK CORNER, IT WILL BE FOUND UNDER CHAPTER 2 AND WILL BE LABELED TWO MEN THAT CHANGED AMERICA pg. 25 Factories like Textile Mills, erupted all over the Northeast. In the north the environment helped factories grow. Rivers, streams, and wealthy individuals provided a reliable source of power for the factories. Fewer factories were built in the South because people down there were more interested in farming and using slave labor instead of free labor.
13
Thanks to people like Slater and Lowell hundreds of thousands of people found work and were able to earn money for themselves and their families. Also as an added bonus more women in the North and more children in the North were able to start working and earning money. That’s good right….? COMPLETE THE CHART ON PAGE 26 BY GOING TO BARAKATS LAIR AND CLICKING ON WORKBOOK CORNER AND CLICK THE LINK UNDER CHAPTER 2 TITLE TEENAGERS THEN AND NOW. AFTER COMPLETING THE CHART READ THE PASSAGE INDUSTRIAL FACTORY WORKING CONDITIONS AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW! YOU CAN WORK WITH PEOPLE
14
Final Word pg. 30 The Northern and Southern states of America when combined create one of the most powerful countries in the world, America. But when looked at separately you can see that they are two entirely different countries. Someone once said a “house divided cannot stand.” and in America’s case it really was divided. The north believed in paying people for work, while the south believed in slavery and forced labor!
