Special Education Jargon SpED – Special Education IDEA – Individuals with Disabilities Education Act LRE – Least Restrictive Environment FAPE – Free Appropriate Education Disability – inability to perform activity in the usual way Impairment – loss/reduced function of body part/organ Handicap – a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities At-risk – great than usual chance of developing a disability

3. What is Special Education? Special education is when a student has a disability that interferes with learning and prevents the student from making progress. The student needs specialized instruction!

5. Specialized Instruction Different methods of teaching and modifying the curriculum so that students with disabilities can learn and make progress.

6. Accommodations Accommodations are things done for the students like Extra time on tests Copies of notes Preferential seating Assignments broken down in manageable steps Organization Using calculator Testing accommodations

Services Services are provided to the student to help the student learn skills for learning Speech therapy Occupational therapy Reading instruction Social skills Physical therapy Small group instruction Re-teaching Pre-teaching In or out of the classroom that is designed to provide the student with the support necessary to succeed.

8. Specialized Program The student should receive what is appropriate. This can be provided in Instruction Services Accommodations Supports Equipment Placement

9. No cost to parents Special education is provided for free! Under IDEA – Individuals with Disabilities Education Act states that all students must be provided a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) (free) This education must be according to the student’s needs (appropriate) For effective progress In the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
