Light Chapter 12 Lesson 3

What is Light?

Light is made of these two types of energy. Electric and Magnetic. Light travels as a wave and has a frequency and amplitude. Light waves vibrate in the direction perpendicular to the direction of their motion so they are called transverse waves.

What is Light?

Does light need a medium to travel through? No Unlike sound, light CAN travel fastest through a vacuum at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. (miles/s) It can also travel through mediums like solids, liquids and gases, but it travels slower through these mediums.

What is Light? Define wave length – The distance between one peak and the next in a wave.

Light is also a Particle Light is a like a particle in these ways. – It travels in straight lines called light rays. – It has momentum, which is sort of like movement. – It hits objects. Define photon- a tiny bundle of energy by which light travels.

How does light make shadows? When light strikes an object, it bounces off the object causing scattering light. We see objects when light has scattered off the object and entered our eyes. Sometimes the photons of light are absorbed by an object. When this happens the object gains energy. Dark colors absorb more light than light colors.

How does light make shadows? Transparent - Objects that allow most light through. Translucent - Objects that blur light as it passes through. Opaque – Its an object allows little to no light through.

Transparent

Translucent

Opaque

How does light make a shadow? The materials that block light are opaque and translucent and this is why we see shadows. Shadows are just the absence of light.

How does light make a shadow? Shadow with sun directly overhead A shadow when the sun’s rays are slanted.

How does light make a shadow? The two sources of light are natural and artificial. Natural light is the sun. What else is natural light? Artificial light is a flashlight or a lamp.

How does light bounce and bend? Define image – A “picture” of the light source that light makes bouncing off a shiny surface. The image in the mirror is clear because most of the light waves reflect straight back at you off the mirror’s shiny, smooth surface. Light reflects at predictable angles when bouncing off a mirror. Light scatters at unpredictable angles when reflecting off uneven surfaces.

How does light bounce and bend?

How does light bounce and bend? Define law of reflection – the angle of an incoming light ray equals the angle of the reflected light ray.

How does light bounce and bend?

Concave Mirrors Concave mirrors curve inward and look like this. Light reflecting off concave mirrors will look like the diagram below.

Light Bending Through Concave Lens Notice how the light bends coming OUT of the lens.

Light Bending Through Concave Lens

Light Bending Through Convex Lens - Light enters the lens in parallel lines, but the lens bends it to focus beyond the lens.
