DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVE ANGLES and BALL LINE (dashed line) MULTIPLE ball POSITIONS EVALUATE: GOALKEEPER POSITION ON THE BALL-LINE (location)? GOALKEEPER MOVEMENT (efficiency of footwork) SET and READY? WHEN? BODY SHAPE / STANCE? Basic Concepts: The GK’s position will allow the GOAL TO APPEAR SMALLER based on the movement down the “Ball Line”. The BALL LINE is the line between the center of the goal and the ball. The GK should place themselves ON THIS LINE. Coach will demonstrate angle play using ropes from each post and a rope from the center of the goal to the ball (ball line) to illustrate maximum angles the GK must cover. TEACH TACTICAL CUES: (ask the candidates…..) ***What variables (game cues) determine the set POSITION of the GK along the ball-line? 5 ANGLE PLAY / MICRO-GOALKEEPING
U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING ANGLE PLAY / MICRO-GOALKEEPING G 2 1 C TRAINING CONCEPT: Goalkeeper positioning (angle) 2 Cones establish the maximum coverage > for ball #1 and #2 ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION: The Coach (C) serves the ball to position #1 or #2 The GK responds with movement- stops the shot. Repeat for 6 Repetitions then rest. CONCEPT: The Cones illustrate the MAXIMUM ANGLE to cover for each ball position. ORGANIZATION: 1. Coach ( C ) passes to server 1 or 2. 2. GK Moves into line with the ball and saves in goal created by cone and post. 3. Repeat 6 times (Rest in between saves). EVALUATE: Small quick steps – Get onto the ball line Get set prior to the shot. (field Conditions= wet, rainy) …a standard technique used around the world. It is used in fast conditions, such as wet weather, and when there is a particularly challenging low shot. © U.S. Soccer CONFIDENTIAL: Not to be shared without U.S. Soccer Approval

U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE THE FRONT “SMOTHER” MECHANICS: Hands and Arms? Body posture-shape? Hips? Stance? Receiving-controlling the ball? WHEN? WHY? Hands/arms are extended to meet the ball, wrists and elbows close together, palms up. While securing the ball, GK stays as low to the ground as possible and pushes body forward, through the save, sliding onto the forearms keeping the forearms close together. Hips must stay low throughout this save. GK will typically take a wider stance (more risk) when making this save The GK MUST control the ball with the hands first and then smother the ball. 8 FRONT SMOTHER U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING 2
1 C CONCEPT: 2 Cones establish the maximum coverage > for ball #1 and #2 ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION: The Coach (C) serves the ball to position #1 or #2 The GK responds with movement- stops the shot. Repeat for 6 Repetitions then rest. TRAINING CONCEPT: GK controlling low shots into body) Repetition of technique across the face of the goal. ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION: The Coach (C) serves the ball from central position GK saves then sprints to defend the serve from #1, then #2 Variation: Alter the sequence of serves ORGANIZATION: Coach ( C ) shoots at GK defending the central cone goal (4 yards from the goal line) Service should be around the body. GK saves and then sprints to save from server 1 who hits a hard low shot for a front smother. Repeat both sides. Exercise can also be switched to have a shot from the angle first and then from the central player. EVALUATE: Body shape and stance in preparation to save – stay compact and have hands and elbows forward. Set prior to the shot. Use correct technique (smother mechanics) Small quick steps – Get onto the ball line Get set prior to the shot. U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE DIVING- LOW BALLS BODY MECHANICS Shoulders? Step? (footwork) Toes? Hands? Eyes? Securing the ball? SAVING LOW BALLS KEY POINTS: ONLY DIVE WHEN YOU CAN”T GET THERE WITH FOOTWORK SHOULDERS: low and close to the knees – the greater the distance the slower the GK will be STEP: Take a LATERAL step to the side that the ball is going. TOES: facing where the ball has come from, not the direction that the body is moving to. HANDS: Project forward, slightly in front of the body to meet the ball in a contour shape (Make the shape of the ball with the hands) RIGHT or LEFT: When diving right, step with the right foot and keep the right shoulder close to the right knee. (Opposite is true for the left). EYES: The body stays low to the ground and the eyes see the ball through the window created by the arms as the save is being made. SECURING THE BALL: Secure the ball with the hands, one hand behind the ball and one hand on top. POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING DIVING- LOW BALLS 1 2 G G C C C TRAINING CONCEPT: GK controlling low shots away from body) Repetition of technique with a demand on dynamic movement ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION: The Coach (C) serves the ball from position “C” GK saves, resets and repeats to the opposite direction. GK starts at central cone and saves to the right, reset and repeat in opposite direction. ORGANIZATION 1. Goalkeeper (G) starts one cone and saves a low ball, played by Coach ( C ) to right side. GK resets and repeats to the left. - Repeat 2. GK starts at central cone and saves to the right. GK reloads immediately and sprints back to central cone and saves to the left **These are sample exercises, they can also be done in the goal** EVALUATE: Body shape Preparation to save. 11 FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE DIVING: MID-RANGE BALLS
U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE DIVING: MID-RANGE BALLS BODY MECHANICS Shoulders? Step? (footwork) Toes? Hands? Eyes? Securing the ball? SAVING MID-RANGE BALLS KEY POINTS: Key points: ONLY DIVE WHEN YOU CAN”T GET THERE WITH FOOTWORK Keep the shoulders low and close to the knees – the greater the distance the slower the GK will be. Take a LATERAL step to the side that the ball is going. Keep the toes facing where the ball has come from, not the direction that the body is moving to. If the toes point to the side the hips will rotate! Project the hands forward, slightly in front of the body to meet the ball in a contour shape (Make the shape of the ball with the hands) When diving right, step with the right foot and keep the right shoulder close to the right knee. (Opposite is true for the left). GK must hold their upper body higher and control the ball whilst in the air. One hand behind the ball the other on top. 12 DIVING: MID-RANGE BALLS
U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING DIVING: MID-RANGE BALLS G C 1 TRAINING CONCEPT: GK controlling mid-range shots away from body) Repetition of technique with a demand on dynamic movement ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION: The Coach (C) serves the ball from position “C” (near post) GK saves, recovers across the goal mouth and saves from server #1. Repeat from opposite post as starting position. SAVING MID-RANGE BALLS ORGANIZATION: (Coach will give simple repetition and make coaching points and progress) GK saves a mid-range shot from Coach ( C ) at the near post. GK then recovers and gets across the goal to save from server 1, making the appropriate save. Repeat from both sides. EVALUATION: Stay square to where the ball is coming from. 13 FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE PARRYING / TIPPING
U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE PARRYING / TIPPING WHEN? Physical Cues? MECHANICS One hand? Two hands? Right or Left hand? PARRYING & TIPPING When? Cannot catch the ball, or is in doubt of catching the ball How? Palm and fingers. When diving the GK may find themselves parrying with one or two hands depending on the type of shot. Cues? Height and speed of the ball will determine whether the GK decides they can catch or deflect and whether they can use one or two hands. If the ball is moving away from the body at pace, the GK will typically use one hand as reaching with one hand will give them more reach. If the shot is a little closer to the body but has too much pace, the GK may elect to use two hands. The GK will should use the hand closest to the ball. If the ball is over shoulder height, the GK will deflect using the top hand, if is below the GK will typically use the low hand. When the ball is above the head and the GK is in doubt as to whether they can catch the ball, the GK should use a large surface area (open hands) to tip the ball over the bar. **Coach should demonstrate techniques and address when appropriate in session** © U.S. Soccer CONFIDENTIAL: Not to be shared without U.S. Soccer Approval

14 FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE RELOADING: GETTING BACK TO FEET
U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUE RELOADING: GETTING BACK TO FEET MECHANICS Top Leg? Eyes and chest facing? Gain momentum? RELOADING- GETTING BACK TO FEET Recovery after a Dive (From down to up) CONCEPT: Get back to their feet at speed, especially if they have given up a rebound or deflected the ball. HOW? From a diving position, GK should kick their top leg forward, away from their body. This gives momentum to lift the upper body off of the ground. Keep chest, hands and head facing the field of play. · GK may use a fist to support their weight and help them push the body up into a kneeling position – one knee in the ground and one up. From there the GK should stand and be in the set position, facing the field and ready for the next situation. **Coach should demonstrate and revisit when appropriate** © U.S. Soccer CONFIDENTIAL: Not to be shared without U.S. Soccer Approval

15 COMPETITION: SHOT-STOPPING GAME
U.S. SOCCER “D” COURSE POSITION-SPECIFIC : GOALKEEPING COMPETITION: SHOT-STOPPING GAME G SHOT-STOPPING GAME ORGANIZATION: 5v5+4 with GK’s in an area 36 long by 44 wide. 2 defenders and 3 attackers at each end. RULES: Players may not cross the center line. Neutral players have 2 touches. EVALUATE / TEACH: Encourage shots from all angles. Coach from behind the goal!
