A reminder about place value Have a look at the number 623. 6 0 0 2 0 3 6 2 3 6 hundreds 2 tens 3 units 6 is the hundreds digit. 2 is the tens digit. 3 is the units digit.

Division Sums A division sum can be written in lots of different ways. 4 92 92 4 92 ÷ 4 All these mean 92 divided by 4.
4
Division and Multiplication There is a link between division and multiplication sums: 100 ÷ 20 = 5 5 x = 100 ÷ 5 = 20 x 5 = 100 Division and multiplication are opposites or inverses.
5
Short division 396 ÷ 3 can be written like this: To work out this sum, divide 3 into 396 one digit at a time, starting here. Put the results along here. 3 goes into 3 exactly once. 1 3 3 9 6
6
Short division 1 3 3 9 6 3 goes into 9 exactly 3 times. 3
7
Short division 1 3 3 9 6 3 3 goes into 6 exactly 2 times. 2 396 ÷ 3 = 132

5 2 5 8 5 Short division What if the numbers don’t divide exactly? This is where you carry numbers. 2 585 ÷ 5 can be written like this: Start here as we did last time. 5 into 2 won’t go, so you carry the 2. 2
9
5 2 5 8 5 Short division 2 5 into 25 goes exactly 5 times – put 5 in the answer. 5
10
5 2 5 8 5 Short division 2 5 5 into 8 goes once with 3 over – put 1 in the answer and carry the 3. 1 3
11
5 2 5 8 5 Short division 2 51 3 5 into 35 goes exactly 7 times – put 7 in the answer. 7 2 585 ÷ 5 = 517
12
Long Division Look at this sum: 8 640 ÷ 15 15 8 6 4 0 15 into 8 doesn’t go – so look at the next digit. 15 x 5 = 75, so 15 goes into 86 five times. 5 Notice the 5 goes above the 6. Take 75 from the 86 to get your remainder. 7 5 1
13
Long Division 15 8 6 4 0 5 7 5 1 Next, bring down the 4. 4 7 x 15 = 105 so 15 goes into 114 seven times. 7 Take 105 away from 114 to get your remainder. 1 0 5 9
14
Long Division 15 8 6 4 0 5 7 5 1 Next, bring down the 0. 4 6 x 15 = 90 so 15 goes into 90 six times. 7 1 0 5 9 6 0 8 640 ÷ 15 = 576
15
Long Division There’s a trap for the unwary in this one: 6 539 ÷ 13 13 6 5 3 9 13 into 6 doesn’t go – so look at the next digit. 13 x 5 = 65, so 13 goes into 65 five times exactly. 5 Notice the 5 goes above the 5. Take 65 from 65 to get a remainder of 0. 6 5 0
16
Long Division 13 6 5 3 9 Bring down the 3. 5 6 5 03 13 does not go into 3 so put a zero in the answer. 0 Now bring down the 9. 9 13 x 3 = 39, so 13 goes into 39 three times exactly. 3 6 539 ÷ 13 = 503

Division Glossary Here are some words which will crop up when you do division sums. DivideDivisible Left overRemainder ShareGroups Carry Click to see an example of how each one is used. If you divide 6 by 3 you get 2. 6 is divisible by 3. 7 is not divisible by 3. 7 divided by 3 is 2 with 1 left over. 7 divided by 3 is 2 remainder 1. If you share 6 sweets between 3 people, each person gets 2. There are 3 groups of 4 in 12. If you work out 2 565 ÷ 5 you need to carry some numbers.
