8 San Mateo Overview  Population: 723,000  Labor Force: 371,000  Unemployment: 3.6%  9 th Highest Level of Dislocations in California  Median Home Price: $745,000  550 square miles

9 Biotech: A Strategic Industry  California accounts for more than 25 percent of biotechnology jobs in the United States.  Nearly 40 percent of all new biotech firms in the United States from 1997 to 2001 were located in California.  There are 2,500 companies in the life sciences cluster in California.

10 A Demand Driven Initiative The Biotech industry was faced with a critical need for manufacturing positions A “perfect storm:” - Several major new drugs were moving into manufacturing Traditional workforce sources were not meeting the need
