We are going to WALK you through what the paper will look like on Monday 16 th. And TALK you through the way you should answer the questions. Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact questions that will be set but we can give you some good practise today!

You cannot ‘blag’ this exam. It is the first half of the full course qualification and will be testing your specialist knowledge of the religions and issues you’ve studied.

This will be your first experience of a GCSE exam. In the summer you will have your first experience of opening an envelope containing your exam result.

The grade boundaries may well be the same or very similar when you sit your real Paper 1 next year. It’s important we are realistic when marking mock papers.

Give two different reasons for your opinion. You can either give two different reasons on the same side of the argument or you can say you can appreciate both sides.

B) Do you think conversion experiences prove the existence of God? YESNO It is proof to the individual person who experiences it but not to everyone else. Proof is subjective. People often have a conversion experience when they’re searching for meaning in life. It doesn’t prove that God exists. Some people claim to have had conversion experiences in order to get fame, money or attention. It isn’t proof of God.

I can appreciate both sides of the argument. On the one hand, I think that conversion experiences are proof of God’s existence for the individual person who experiences them. What we believe to be proof of God is subjective. For example, a drug addict who claims they heard God’s voice and then converted to Christianity and changed their life for the better may feel they have proof of God’s existence in their own life. On the other hand, I am also convinced by the argument that conversion experiences are not proof of the existence of God. This is because some psychologists argue that people tend to have conversion experiences when they are searching for answers to life. Converting to a religion helps to answer those questions. For example, if someone who was suffering from a terminal illness converted to Islam, it may be because they think it helps them to make sense of the difficult situation they’re in. It’s not evidence of God. I do not think that conversion experiences are proof of God’s existence. My first reason for this is because I believe that many people fake conversion experiences in order to get fame, attention or money. For example, there are often documentaries and TV shows focussing on such life-changing experiences. Therefore, I do not think they are proof of God, just proof that people are looking to increase their popularity. A second reason I hold this view is because some psychologists argue that people tend to have conversion experiences when they are searching for answers to life. **C) Explain the main features of a Christian upbringing and how it may lead to belief in God.

Firstly, one main feature of a Christian upbringing is that parents might send their child to a Christian school. This might lead to a belief in God because it means that what the child is taught at home is reinforced by teachers and other students. For example, this might happen through collective worship, religious celebrations and assemblies. Secondly, another main feature of a Christian upbringing is that parents might buy their child a Bible and encourage them to read it. This might lead the child to a belief in God because it allows them to read about their parents’ faith for themselves. For example they might read the parables of Jesus and decide that they teach good morals that are useful for their lives. Thirdly, another main feature of a Christian upbringing is that parents might get their child baptised. This might lead the child to believe in God because the child may feel welcomed into the Christian community and therefore be more likely to follow in the footsteps of those around them. For example, if a child is baptised when they are a baby they might feel that they are already a believer in God and therefore be encouraged to continue. Finally, another main feature of a Christian upbringing is that parents might bring their child up as part of the Christian community. This goes beyond attending it Church – it can mean families socialising and enjoying significant Christian celebrations together e.g Christmas and Easter. This might lead to a belief in God because reinforces what the child is taught at home and at school.

Firstly, some Christians support women having the same rights as men because they believe in the teaching “your body is a temple.” This means that they believe everyone’s body is home to the holy spirit; it doesn’t matter if the person is male or female. Therefore, men and women deserve to have the same rights. Firstly, some Muslims support equal rights for women because they believe in the sanctity of all human life. This is the belief that all life is sacred and belongs to Allah. This tells them that men’s and women’s lives are just as important to Allah and therefore they deserve equal respect and rights. ChristianityIslam N – Priests have to be male because Jesus only chose disciples who were male. N – Jesus did respect women but he wanted them to play other important roles such as praying but teaching others in church was not one of those roles. N- It was Eve who disobeyed God first. N- Qur’an says that men were created to protect women and should therefore be the leader of the household and religion. Y – Aisha one of Muhammed’s (pbuh) wives was a scholar – she lectured and advised men and women long after Muhammed (pbuh) died. Y - Qur’an teaches that although men and women have different roles, they are equal.

Variety of foods e.g. in Nottingham there is a wide variety of restaurants serving different cuisines e.g. Polish, Indian, Turkish etc. Inter-faith marriages Although in many ways this is a positive aspect, it can be challenging for some families to accept someone marrying outside of their faith. Interfaith marriages Show that love can cross boundaries of religion Discrimination Some people may act on their prejudice views and discriminate against people of other ethnicities. Variety of music e.g. bhangra is a type of music associated with Punjabi culture and Hip Hop has origins in African-America. Conversion Some people who hold strict, conservative religious views believe that only their religion is the right one and that they should try and convert others to their religion. Gives people of different religions a chance to discover shared values and similarities. Language barriers Sometimes people can struggle to communicate with each other if they don’t share the same language. Variety of clothing e.g. kaftans are very popular and they originated from Persia and Turkey. Religious bigotry Some people hold prejudiced views and discriminate against those of a different religion. Encourages people to learn about a variety of different religions It can be difficult to achieve community cohesion when there are so many ethnicities within one society. It can be difficult for everyone to agree on a common vision. Encourages people to know and learn more about other cultures. Places of worship It can be challenging to ensure everyone has a place to worship. Encourages people to respect difference.
