Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject of the piece or the audience. Mood is the feeling or emotion created by the piece and experienced by the reader.

The mood affects the entire piece of writing and creates a feeling within the reader. How an author uses language affects the mood: punctuation, diction, syntax, imagery, etc. all help to create a certain mood – a feeling or emotion – for the reader.

An author’s tone is the way they feel – their attitude - about the subject of the writing or about the audience.

Similar to how an author conveys mood, the tone – or attitude – of an author is expressed through their use of language: syntax, diction, figurative language, imagery, etc.

Mood is the feeling the reader experiences. Tone is the attitude of the author.
