2  Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject of the piece or the audience.  Mood is the feeling or emotion created by the piece and experienced by the reader.

3  Positive Cheerful  Hopeful  Joyful  Silly  Peaceful  Negative  Heartbroken  Sad  Depressed  Angry  Distraught  Confused

4  The mood affects the entire piece of writing and creates a feeling within the reader.  How an author uses language affects the mood: punctuation, diction, syntax, imagery, etc. all help to create a certain mood – a feeling or emotion – for the reader.

5  An author’s tone is the way they feel – their attitude - about the subject of the writing or about the audience.

6  Similar to how an author conveys mood, the tone – or attitude – of an author is expressed through their use of language: syntax, diction, figurative language, imagery, etc.

7  Mood is the feeling the reader experiences.  Tone is the attitude of the author.
