Tone vs. Mood How to tell the difference

tone Tone is the author’s attitude toward a subject. If we were to read a description of a first date that included words and phrases like “dreaded” and “my buddies forced me to go on the date,” we could assume that the individual didn’t really enjoy the date. We can tell that this guy feels upset or unhappy because of his word choice (also called “diction”). Tone (attitude towards the date) = Unhappy

Let’s make it easier to understand… Emoticons are used to represent an author’s emotion. What emotion does each one suggest?

What emoticon would you use for each of these sentences? This is the apartment we live in. It provides shelter. This place does need some repairs, but I’m sure the landlord will be making improvements sometime soon. If only there were some decent jobs out there, I wouldn’t be reduced to living in this miserable dump. When we move away, we’re planning to release three hundred cockroaches and tow mice, so we can leave the place exactly as we found it. “This place may be shabby, but since both of my children were born while we lived here, it has a special place in my heart.

mood Mood is the atmosphere of a piece of writing; it’s the emotions a selection arouses in a reader. Imagine this: You are watching the scariest movie you have ever seen in your entire life. Truly, you are creeped out. All of the sudden, some dark, weird music starts playing as the main character slowly begins to open a door. Mood = Tense, Anxious, Scared

Batman Gets Voice Lessons Think about these questions while you watch the video… The writers were being ______________ (tone) They were trying to make you feel ________ (mood)

The writers make Batman comical, so they felt that this subject is funny, silly (tone). They are trying to make you, the audience, feel amused (mood).

Now, let’s look at how an author’s tone can completely change how you, the audience, feel about something… This is something I like to call “destroying childhood classics…”
