1 Building Public Health Capacity & Capability through Workforce Development

2 Project Aim: To develop and implement a framework for workforce development that outlines the training and development requirements for the next 2-3 years. Building upon existing public health training the project will firmly place public health into all job roles employed by LCH.

3 Project Work-streams: 1.Review existing public health training to establish a baseline of the public health training investment since 2008. 2.Develop a programme of public health training aligned to LCH workforce underpinned by NHS Yorkshire & Humber workforce development Framework 3.Review and amend LCH job descriptions to align to public health vision 4.Review of Corporate Induction to incorporate public messages and provide new starters with level one of the model 5.Development of CPD pathway for LCH staff with public health specific job role 6.Incorporate review of employee public health role and responsibilities (to be defined within job descriptions) into the performance appraisal system 7.Building upon existing work, influence local higher education institutions (HEI’s) to incorporate LCH public health agenda (i.e. Yorkshire and Humber level 1 & 2 of the framework) into pre-reg nursing and therapy modules in collaboration with clinical education lead, commissioners and local HEI’s 8.Development of public health work placements for students studying in local higher education institutions (HEI’s), facilitating and collaborating in public health research

4 Project Challenges Releasing staff to attend training Embedding training targets into service performance dashboards Measuring implementation of training (this interfaces with the EMIS project)

5 Project Output Public health training plan for next 2-3 years with KPI’s aligned to services to facilitate implementation of plan Public health statements embedded into all JD’s and measured via performance appraisal Public Health embedded into corporate induction programme CPD pathway for public health staff including annual calendar of development LCH formally contributing to the public health education with local HEI’s; aiding in the development of public health curriculums, i.e. offering work-placements and topics of study that will increase our ability research capacity. Project Outcomes / additional benefits Reduced health inequalities – Strategic Objective Increasing capacity to make every contact count, and enhancing the quality of service provided to patients / service users Increased ability to deliver on the public health agenda could lead to successfully securing new business and increasing market share Enhanced partnership working with local HEI’s potentially leading to increasing our ability to undertake public health research Increased referrals to public health services (both internal & external) enabling greater partnership working to achieve health outcomes
