A CHRISTMAS MEMORY This short story is set in an old house in rural Alabama in the 1930s. The narrator, Buddy, recalls the last Christmas season he shared with his “best friend”, and elderly female cousin. Buddy was seven years old at the time.

WHO WAS TRUMAN CAPOTE? Born Truman Streckfus Persons September 24, 1924, in New Orleans.Truman Streckfus Persons He was, for all practical purposes, an orphan for much of his childhood. His closest friends at this time were an elderly cousin, Miss Sook Faulk, and a neighboring tomboy, Harper Lee (1926–). She later became an award-winning author herself, writing To Kill a Mockingbird. Both friends appear as characters in Capote's early fiction.Harper Lee He did poorly in school, even though psychological tests proved that his IQ was above genius level.psychological tests He is most famous for writing “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, which was turned into a movie starring Audrey Hepburn, and “True Crime”, which was based on real-life murders in a rural town. Died from liver disease in 1984.

WHAT IS ART DECO? It is a shortened term from French art décoratif ‘decorative art,’ from the 1925 Exposition des Arts décoratifs in Paris (but the term was not in use until the 1960s)

JUXTAPOSITION Think about the setting of the story as you design pages. There should be a big contrast between what we see on your page and what would have been realistic for the time. Poor, rural Alabama in the 1930s – definitely not sleek, modern, glittering, or jazzy! A few more examples
