What’s wrong with this? Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. It was first published anonymously on January 10, 1776, during the American Revolution. Common Sense, signed "Written by an Englishman", became an immediate success.[2] In relation to the population of the Colonies at that time, it had the largest sale and circulation of any book in American history. Common Sense presented the American colonists with a powerful argument for independence from British rule at a time when the question of independence was still undecided. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood; forgoing the philosophy and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, Paine structured Common Sense like a sermon and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[3] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as, "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era".[4] [1]pamphletThomas PaineAmerican Revolution[2]British Enlightenment erasermonBiblical[3]Gordon S. Option 1 Paragraph form: The Boston Massacre involved a group of colonists and a few British soldiers insulting each other. This event was caused by the frustration of the colonists from having British soldiers in the colonies that were taking jobs and overall harassing American colonists. This took place in the city of Boston, in front of the Custom house. After being provoked by a group of colonists, British soldiers guarding the Custom House fired upon the crowd. Although the event was called a “massacre”, only 5 people died, including Crispus Attucks. The effect of this event was that the Americans used it as a tool of Anti-British propaganda. This event was important because it showed how the Americans could use negative interactions with the British in their favor, and unite against the British. Source: American History Book, page 100

Constitution Adopted-1790 *We did this together in class. Use as your Event #19! Who? The adoption of the Constitution involved both the federalists and the anti- federalists. Where? The adoption took place within the states. What happened? Only nine states needed to ratify the constitution for it to go into effect. This was accomplished. However, delegates wanted the unanimous support of all states. Virginia and New York were 2 states that had yet to ratify the document. Virginia was important to get the support of because it was the largest, most populated state. New York was important to get the support of because it could divide the nation geographically. Finally, the federalists will convince anti-federalists within the holding states to ratify and adopt the constitution. Cause? The cause of the adoption of the constitution was due to the promise of adding a Bill of Rights to it. Effect? The effect of the adoption was that the United States now had a new plan of government Importance? The importance of the adoption of the Constitution was that it remains the backbone of our government, establishes checks & Branches, and protects individual rights.
