LAB SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT Unit 1 SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY
2
TOPIC OVERVIEW UNIT: Scientific Inquiry TOPIC: Lab Safety and Equipment AIM: What can we do to guarantee our safety during lab experiments? What are the locations of safety materials and emergency procedures. What different equipment’s are used in the lab and what are their functions (use)?
3
9/11/15 OVERVIEW UNIT: Scientific Inquiry TOPIC: Lab Safety AIM: What behaviors are ok (acceptable) for the Lab? Do Now: Write down THREE incorrect behaviors in the lab that can endanger students. What corrections should students do to stay safe during the experiment.
4
MR. BEAN CHEMISTRY LAB
5
OBJECTIVE: Learn what to do/not to do in order to stay safe in the lab Learn to practice safe procedures Learn what to do in case of an accident in the lab Learn to recognize the lab equipment and their functions Learn how to correctly use the lab equipment
6
GO OVER PRE-LAB: TAKE A LOOK AT THE LAB SAFETY HANDOUT Remember to always listen actively and follow instructions carefully! You need to stay alert at all times in order to stay safe during experiments!
7
CLASS WORK ACTIVITY 1- Working in the Laboratory: Biology Read over the Procedures and precautions when working in the laboratory
8
HOME WORK ACTIVITY 1- Working in the Laboratory: Biology Reread over the Procedures and precautions when working in the laboratory and then COMPLETE questions 1-10 in Part A- Laboratory Safety
9
9/16/15 OVERVIEW UNIT: Scientific Inquiry TOPIC: Lab Equipment AIM: Describe the two types of observations? Do Now: What is one Procedure for an Accident in a lab? What are 3 types of Precautions when working in the Laboratory?
10
WHY DO YOU THINK WE USE EQUIPMENT/TOOLS IN LAB?
11
LAB TOOLS ARE USED FOR QUANTITATIVE observation: Things we can measure with numbers QUALITATIVE observation: Details that cannot be measured with numbers * Lab tools help us make observations so we can make conclusions
12
WHAT MAY BE SOME LAB TOOLS USED FOR QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATION? Quantity - Deals with numbers Examples include:
13
WHAT MAY BE SOME LAB TOOLS USED FOR QUALITATIVE OBSERVATION? Quality- detail that is not measured with numbers Examples include:
14
WHAT ARE SOME NAMES OF LAB EQUIPMENT?
15
THE LABORATORY EQUIPMENT MUST KNOWS Know the name of the equipment Know how to use the equipment Know when to use the equipment
16
1. MICROSCOPE Has two or more lenses used to magnify (enlarge) specimens 2. BUNSEN BURNER For heating and exposing items to a flame
17
3. GOGGLES Protects eyes from damaging substances A single lens used for magnifying objects (specimen) 4. HAND LENS
18
5. TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE Used to take mass of a solid object 6. METRIC RULER Used to measure Length/distance of a solid object
19
7. BEAKER 8. GRADUATED CYLINDER 9. TEST TUBE To hold or heat liquids To measure a liquid’s volume Used for performing small chemical experiments
20
HOMEWORK Complete the worksheet describing Quantitative and Qualitative observations.
21
9/17/15 OVERVIEW UNIT: Scientific Inquiry TOPIC: Lab Safety and Equipment AIM: What are the names and functions of the Lab Equipment? Do Now: 1.What is Quantitative observations? 2.Which tools might be used for quantitative observations?
22
10. DISSECTING TRAY 11. DISSECTING PINS 12. SCALPEL To hold a specimen and to pin specimen in place To hold specimen in place To cut specimens for examination
23
13. DISSECTING SCISSORS 14. FORCEPS15. PROBE used to cut specimens or objects grasp or hold small objects assists in dissections for holding, pulling and moving objects
24
16. FUNNEL 17. MEDICINE DROPPER 18. PIPETTE used for transferring liquids between containers measures and/or transfers small amounts of liquid volume used for measuring precise (and often small) amounts of liquid volume
25
19. THERMOMETER 20. TEST TUBE RACK 21. TEST TUBE HOLDER measures temperature. safely holds test tubes. holds test tubes that may be hot or hard to grasp
26
22. PETRI DISH 23.GLASS SLIDE24. COVER SLIP used for growing microorganisms or performing small experiments supports an item being examined under the microscope covers specimen on a slide
27
NOW THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT ALL THE LAB TOOLS… Complete Lab Activity 2: Lab Equipment ***This will be counted as your first lab Report***
28
HOME WORK 09/09/14 ACTIVITY 1- Working in the Laboratory: Biology COMPLETE Working in the Laboratory: PART 1
29
