Pamela Curtin First Grade

Characteristics of Students  First graders are typically between the ages of six and seven. During this time they develop a great deal. Every child’s development is unique and extremely different. However, most children develop similarly and reach particular milestones at the same time as their peers. First grade students will most likely have the characteristics below. Physical Characteristics -squirm while sitting, love to skip, run, tumble, throw, catch, and dance to music, sloppy and always in a hurry, noisy, and curious. Social Characteristics -friendly, enthusiastic, competitive, sensitive, talkative, and bossy. Intellectual Characteristics - Understand the difference between right and wrong, may write letters reversed, able to problem solve, still have a short attention span, question everything, and pick up an increased vocabulary.

Social Studies Standards The first grade social studies program focuses on helping students learn about their important roles as members of society, especially in their own families and the school community. My family and other families History of my family My community and local region Places in my community Challenge of meeting needs and wants Economic decision making Symbols of citizenship Rights, responsibilities, roles of citizenship People making and changing rules and laws

My family and other families Different types of families Family Vocabulary Beliefs, customs, traditions Sister Grandma Mom Grandpa Dad Brother

Places in my community Important places in the community Directions to get to these places North, south, east and west *NEVER EAT SOGGY WAFFLES* Library Hospital Playground Fire Dept. School

In Mathematics First Graders develop an understanding for addition and subtraction, whole number relationships which includes grouping tens and ones, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes. Number Sense Operations in Base ten Algebra Geometry Estimation Measurement and data Units Statistics and Probability Problem Solving Math Standards

Number Sense Count the items in a collection and know the last counting word tells how many items are in a collection. Explore and use place value. Use the words lower, greater, and less to compare two numbers. Skip count by 10’s to 100, 5’s to 50, and 2’s to 20. Develop an initial understanding of the base ten system. Ex. 10 ones= 1 ten

Geometry Match shapes and parts of shapes to justify congruency. Identify symmetry in two-dimensional shapes. Recognize geometric shapes and structures in the environment.

Website This website contains a list of all of the skills students learn in first grade! The skills are organized into categories, and you can move your mouse over any skill name to see a sample question. http://www.ixl.com/math/grade

English Language Arts Standards Reading Key ideas and details Ex-ask and answer questions about text Craft and Structure Ex-Identify who is telling the story at various points Integration of knowledge and ideas Ex-Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories. Writing Text types and purposes Ex-Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Production and distribution of writing Ex-With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed. Responding to literature Create and present a poem, dramatization, art work, or personal response to a particular author or theme studied in class, with support as needed. Responding to literature Make connections between self, text, and the world around them (text, media, social interaction). Range of reading and level of text complexity With prompting and support, read prose and poetry of appropriate complexity for grade 1.

Standards Continued Speaking and Listening Comprehension and Collaboration Ex-Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood. Presentation of knowledge and ideas Ex- Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly. 13 Responding to Literature Reading and Writing After students have a read or listened to a story it is important to have them do a follow up assignment to be sure they fully understand the content. – It is usually helpful to do a reading web or another type of engaging activity

Key Ideas and Details Reading, listening and speaking Each week students should sit one-on-one with their teacher and read a selected book The teacher should ask the following questions during or at the end of the text – Who is telling the story? – What are the major events in the story? – If there is a problem ask what the problem is – What happened at the end of the story? By asking these questions the teacher will be able to assess the reading level of the student and determine the next appropriate book the child should begin reading

Science

Interaction Among Subjects Interaction among the subjects is highly important. It helps reinforce their learning and saves a lot of time, EXAMPLES Math: word problems involve mathematical content and literature Science and Social Studies- the study of technology - geographical continuity and changes English- Books incorporating all subjects and writing assignments.
