2 Who am I? 10 th year teaching 3rd year at Apollo Graduated from UW in 2004 Received Teaching Certification from WWU in 2006 Receive National Board Certification in Childhood Literacy in 2011

3 My Favorites Family- come from a family of 4; grew up in Issaquah My husband, John, our 2 kids, Max & Ayla & our dog, Baker Reading anywhere Hiking, biking, playing with my kids Chocolate

4 Why am I a teacher? Connect with young people & form positive relationships. Positive & active role model for kids. Encourage children to have dreams and lifetime goals. Make a difference in the life of a child. My greatest strength is my positive mental attitude.

8 Fifth Grade Curriculum 5 TH GRADE READING *Reading Workshop Model -20 minute lesson, 30 minutes of independent and small group reading *Read to Self each day: about 30 minutes of in-class reading and 30 minutes of at-home reading *Conferences with students *National Geographic nonfiction magazines *Fountas and Pinnell testing: Fall, Winter, Spring *Graphic Novel and Mystery Kits

9 Units of Study Writing Curriculum 4 Parts: Narrative, Informational, Opinion/Argumentative, Memoir Involves short mini lessons and a lot of time for student writing Write a lot of stories and publish the best ones for grades Poetry Unit of Study Fifth Grade Curriculum

10 Everyday Mathematics Curriculum Content: -Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Whole Numbers, Decimals, and Fractions -Geometry: Measuring Angles, Using the Protractor and Compass, 3D Shapes, Tessellations -Comparing, Changing, and Ordering Fractions and Decimals -Area, Volume, and Capacity Problem Solving: -Breaking down problems, listing step-by-step ways of solving them, learning strategies

13 Family Life & Sexual Health End of January Ground Rules, Friendship, Family, Decision Making, Puberty, Reproductive System, HIV/AIDS Parent Preview Days set up by district– look for newsletter soon (usually December) All work done in class will need to be signed by a parent

14 Fifth Grade Assessment Smarter Balanced Assessment for Reading and Math Done on the computer at the end of April Technology: Students will learn the basics of dragging, scrolling, marking, drawing, and anything else needed to complete the test Science will continue to be the paper and pencil MSP

15 Fifth Grade Homework Expect up to 60 minutes per night! There is homework every night, including weekends. Friday Study Hall during recess Students receive $1 for every completed homework assignment Challenge Assignments: Extra Credit It is expected all homework is turned in, regardless if it is late or not Reading At Home (RAH) & MAH are crucial! 17 Fifth Grade Grading 4 = Above Expectation of a 5 th grader, at or near perfection, fabulous 3 = Meets the 5 th grade Expectation, where they should be, great job 2 = Approaching the 5 th grade Expectation, needs a little work 1 = Below the 5 th grade Expectation, needs a big improvement *Not equivalent to the A, B, C, D, F
