Scott Fitzgerald 1896-1940  Born in St. Paul, Minnesota  Born in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Family a mixture of old money on his mother’s side and working class on his father’s.  1911-1912 Attended a prep school in New Jersey. 4 1917 - Dropped out to enlist in the Army during WW1 Zelda Syre 1900-1948  He married to Zelda Sayre in 1920, who is from a wealthy family; father a senator, grandfather a judge.  Zelda would not marry Fitzgerald unless he showed promise of making some money.  1921 - Zelda has a baby girl, Scottie  The couple becomes the epitome of the Roaring Twenties: women get the right to vote, prohibition, women’s fashions change, women start attending college.

5 They have wild parties The family moves to Paris Zelda diagnosed schizophrenic and is placed in a sanitorium in Switzerland. Fitzgerald can’t visit but sends her flowers daily Scot dies in 1940 of a heart attack. Zelda dies in 1948 in a fire in a mental institution.

7 Tender is the Night (1934), Most ambitious novel, but a commercial failure the story of Dick Diver and his schizophrenic wife Nicole, goes some way to show the pain that Fitzgerald felt.

8 Tender is the night Characters  Dick Diver, a handsome American psychologist in his thirties, married to Nicole Diver- one of his mental patients.  Rosemary Hoyt, a beautiful eighteen-year-old movie starlet, who falls in love in Dick.

9 Setting  The setting is at the French Riviera

10 The plot and its conflict  Dick has an affair with Rosemary, and his marriage to Nicole starts to fail over time. Dick himself starts to fall apart both physically and emotionally, and he develops a drinking problem. At the end of the novel, Dick moves back to America and his condition starts to improve.  Nicole Warren- Dick's beautiful mental patient (and then wife). Her family is very wealthy and she likes to travel all over Europe and live extravagantly. Nicole is always slipping back and forth between sanity and insanity. After her marriage to Dick fails, she marries Tommy Barban  Rosemary: Dick's younger lover. She is a beautiful actress who has many boyfriends. She tells Dick that he is the only one she has ever really loved. Dick thinks he loves her, but then realizes she is too immature for him. Tommy BarbanNicole WarrenDick & Nicole
