An award winning photo taken in 1994 during the Sudan famine. The picture depicts a famine stricken child crawling towards an United Nations food camp, located a kilometer away. The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat it. This p icture shocked the whole world. No one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer Kevin Carter who left the place as soon as the photograph was taken. Three months later he committed suicide due to depression.

5
Wars In Africa, many civil wars have been caused by European empire building in the 19 th century. Countries were created, split or changed. When they gained independence the result was wars over rights and territory.
6
Natural disasters Many LEDCs are situated in areas of the world where natural disasters are more likely to happen and are more intense. What problems will this cause?
7
Debt LEDC’s have had to borrow from the banks of developed countries in order to survive, cope with natural disasters, or begin to develop. The banks charge interest which is a huge burden on their economy. In the early 70’s Chile borrowed 3.9 billion dollars. By 1982 they had repaid 12.8 billion dollars in interest but still owed money.
8
Unfair trade Rich countries use their wealth to protect the welfare of their own farmers. They offer government subsidies on their products. If they then produce more than they require they can export the surplus. Because growing the products has been subsidised they can sell this surplus at a very low cost. LEDC’s farmers are unable to compete.
9
AIDS/HIV Methods of safer sex and drugs to control the disease are too expensive in LEDC’s. The loss of so many earners affects their economic development. “It is estimated that by 2010 up to a quarter of all children in South Africa will be orphans.”
10
Other factors Lack of education slows down development Lower life expectancy Relying on one export (such as copper or oil) whose market price can fluctuate rapidly.

Causes of Poverty Highlight those causes which could be changed by individual action in one colour, and those which need changes by governments and organisations in another.
