Theme: The message the author wishes to convey to the reader, that the reader can apply to their own life Topic: One or two words that sum up what the story is about Author’s Purpose: The reason the author is writing Main Idea: The most important idea that the writer communicates Topic Sentence: the sentence used to directly state the main idea

Theme ◦ Written as a statement ◦ Something the author wants the reader to learn ◦ Something the reader can apply to their life Ex. “The Golden Rule” Treat others as you want to be treated Topic ◦ 1-2 words ◦ What the story is about Ex. Friendship, Being Yourself

Just remember: ◦ Theme and topic are used in fictional stories ◦ A main idea comes from non-fiction ◦ A topic sentence goes with main idea (non-fiction); not topics (fiction)

Title ◦ Highlights important ideas or characters Plot/Conflict ◦ What conflicts do the characters face? ◦ How are the conflicts resolved? Characters and Their Actions ◦ What do the characters say and do? ◦ How do they handle conflict? ◦ What lessons do they learn? Setting/ Images ◦ What conflicts does the setting create? ◦ What aspects of the setting are emphasized?

Author’s Purpose- the reason they wrote the piece of literature ◦ Persuade ◦ Inform ◦ Entertain Author’s Perspective: how a writer “sees” and presents information and/ or topics ◦ Ex. An author of a political add is pro- Obama Author’s Bias: how a writer’s perspective impacts their stance on a topic ◦ Ex. They want people to vote for Obama
