7 Not so good parts! Stressful and you need tough skin! Emotionally unstable and unpredictable client group Have to gain knowledge through experience Restrictions and security Staff awareness of SLT in this area Staff lack awareness- behavioural vs communication needs At times difficult to see change within the client group Challenging a lack of sense of hope

8 Training I have found useful Social Skills training- Talkabout Dysphagia postgraduate Mental Health, LD and Working with Offenders Clinical Excellence Network Challenging Behaviour training

9 Top tips Try to visit/ shadow other therapists in the field Attend more general SLT training courses Volunteer opportunities are useful to build up experience Gain confidence as a therapist first and just being part of a team Use regular supervision for clinical and managerial support

10 Why did I want to work in the criminal justice sector? Being an NQP Previous background Specific interest in the patient group Personal development plan in developing my skills in forensic services Increasing awareness of mental health and combating stereotypes Rewarding
