3 CURRICULUM Language Arts-reading, writing, listening, and speaking; Houghton Mifflin textbook and core novels. Math-Standards-based; Houghton Mifflin Go Math; additional resources; videos. Science- Rocks and Minerals; Electricity and Magnetism; Plants and Animals; STEM Social Studies- Geography and History of California: Indians, Missions, Gold Rush and Pioneers. P.E.- Motor Skills Thurs. afternoon; grade level rotation soon, weather permitting. Art-Meet the Masters; weekly drawing lesson; other art projects and origami.

4 DISCIPLINE Six Pillars: Citizenship, Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Consequences and rewards; Weekly Evaluation

5 ORGANIZATIONAL TOOLS Three-Ring Binder- please don ’ t throw anything away without checking with your child; study guides and foldables in baggie in binder. Agenda - parent initial once a week Weekly Evaluation - parent signature and return until I can do it online Check our web page monthly; Haiku coming soon Pencils, Erasers, White Board Markers Remind app

6 GRADING Letter Grades; effort, work quality, growth; set realistic goals Standards and Assessments(not always a “test”) 4 Report Cards: 2 quarters and 2 semesters Late or Incomplete Work Absences/tardies

7 HOMEWORK Reading - nightly, Mon.-Th., at least 20 minutes; AR quizzes(goals will be set) Math - Mon.-Thurs.; parent checking(please don’t teach a different way from our new text) even if they say they’re done Writing - parent check for spelling and punctuation Time management and organizational skills; effort; 45-60 minutes Mon.-Thurs. Supportive environment Responsibility, accountability; self-esteem, and self- fulfilling prophecy ENCOURAGEMENT - praise effort and perseverance, but don’t bail them out.

8 QUESTIONS Send a note - staple in Planner Email me before 1:00 p.m., otherwise I won’t see it until after school.

9 Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck Fixed mindset vs. growth mindset “I can’t do that.” vs. “I can’t do that yet.” Praise them for what they accomplish through practice, study, persistence, and good strategies, not praise that judges their talent or intelligence. Many videos on You Tube and Ted talks

10 Common Core Standards College and Career Readiness Process is emphasized: students need to know how and why they arrived at an answer or conclusion. Perseverance is key. “Think math, do math, read math, write math.” Applies to all areas.

11 CLOSING Standards, grades, State test scores, etc. have become part of school, but NOTHING is more important than making sure our children believe they are valued, capable, and can be successful with effort and perseverance and that they ’ re loved. Thank you for coming tonight.
