1 A Guide for the Early Cold War Project TIPS FOR MAKING A SUCCESSFUL POWERPOINT

2  When saving files, make sure they are saved to your flash drive or use Office 365 so they can be used at school and home.  This applies to the PowerPoint,  Any images,  Brief video clips,  Any other important information or files SAVING FILES When you click on “save as”, you need to find the “removable disk” or name of the flash drive prior to saving

3  Choose a Theme by clicking on the Design tab  You can either scroll down or browse for themes. You can also download themes from the internet.  Alter the theme colors if you so choose  Do not choose a distracting theme  Speaking with group members to choose a consistent theme is a good idea CHOOSING A DESIGN

4  Click on the “Home” tab  Click on “New Slide”  You can choose different layout options for the slides  Don’t forget to put a title on each slide  Text  Limit the amount of text you have on a slide  Do explain, Don’t just read off the PPT  Provide analysis of any picture or video  Pictures & Videos  Choose pics that are clear  Make them relevant, if you cannot explain why it is there, don’t use it.  For videos, provide a brief intro and conclusion ADDING SLIDES, PICTURES & TEXT

5 After creating a bulleted list, highlight it all and right click, choose convert to SmartArt Or Insert Smart Art first and type directly into it You can insert SmartArt two ways Highlight your word and right click on it. Choose hyperlink and paste in your web address You can insert a Hyperlink to the internet Hyperlink Click on the text box option and then choose a type of text box You can insert Text Boxes Click on Word Art and choose the type you want You can insert Save to your Student Drive and then insert Any clips (video or audio should be 45 seconds or less) You can insert video or audio files ADDITIONAL OPTIONS This is SmartArt

6  You can click on transitions  Set the presentation to the one you want  You can transition by slide or by mouse click  Preview your choice  You can click on animations  This allows for animations to be added to certain objects  Preview your choice  For both transitions and animations, don’t use anything too distracting MORE ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

7  Save your project to your student drive or a flashdrive, NOT the desktop OR use Office 365  When combining:  Copy all files but holding down shift and the down arrow key  Paste using the 2 nd icon (“keep source formatting)  Share your finished group PowerPoint Presentation with Mr. Clifford SAVING AND COMBINING WITH GROUP MEMBERS

8  Use bulleted info  Include pictures  People  Maps  Political Cartoons  Lots of other options  Vary each slide  It should be visually appealing  Utilize SmartArt, transitions and animations effectively  Consider ways to make effective use of the SmartBoard  Practice, Rehearse, Practice, Rehearse, Practice, Rehearse MAKING YOUR POWERPOINT MORE SUCCESSFUL

9  Including too much text  Overcrowding the slide or having too much “empty space.”  Reading directly off the PowerPoint  Forgetting to explain pictures, sources, hyperlinks, video or audio  Forgetting the order of your own slides or the group’s overall presentation THINGS TO AVOID
