3 Critical Care Nurse in an Intensive Care Unit  Critical Care Nurses care for patients with acute and unstable physiological problems in an environment equipped for technically advanced methods of assessing and managing patient problems (Brown & Edwards, 2012, p. 1859).  Intensive Care Units are designed to meet the health care needs of acute and critically ill patients (Brown & Edwards, 2012, p. 1858). Salary: $60- 80,000 (Nurse, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) salary (Australia), 2015).

4 SWOT Analysis: Internal Strengths:  Age  No personal commitments (eg. kids, partner, house)  Organisation skills  Enjoy a structured environment  Committed  Good communication skills  Work well independently and in a team Weaknesses:  Lack of experience  Lack of knowledge  Lack of confidence

5 SWOT Analysis: External Opportunities:  Application of skills and knowledge I have learnt from my degree  Further education  More chance of employment in the metropolitan area  Caring holistically for others Threats:  Competition for graduate programs and employment  Financial limitation  Further study  ICU is a stressful environment

6 Goals Goal 1: Successful application and completion of graduate program. Strategy: Complete selection criteria and pass interview; work within my scope and complete grad program requirements (Graduates, 2015). Goal 2: Full-time employee of St John of God Health Care (SJGHC), to gain 1-2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Strategy: Apply for jobs at SJGHC campuses/hospitals, if not already employed by one via my graduate program. Goal 3: Successful application and completion of Graduate Diploma of Critical Care Nursing through The University of Notre Dame. Strategy: The 1 year course will be available to registered nurses with at least one year experience and who are full-time employees of SJGHC; and complete diploma requirements (Critical care nursing, 2015).

7 Goals Goal 4: Full-time employment working in an ICU to gain 1-2 years of experience. Strategy: Apply for jobs at in ICU’s, if not already working in one at SJGHC. Goal 5: Successful application and completion of Master of Clinical nursing through Edith Cowan University. Strategy: The 1 year course will be available to registered nurses with at least one year experience in a specialist area of practice (Critical Care Nursing - Intensive Care), and must be concurrently employed in an approved area.

9 Conclusion  Critical care nurse in ICU caring for patients who need constant observation and specialised care (ICU - Intensive Care Unit, 2015).  SWOT : my strengths and opportunities outweigh my weaknesses and threats.  Summary of goals: graduate program, experience as an RN, further critical care study, experience in an ICU and further clinical nursing study.  Supporting literature: courses, about critical care nursing and the demand for critical care nurses.
