Why do we need a Workforce Domain?

Workforce domain – providing high quality care a high quality, patient-centred endoscopy service depends on a workforce that is: –properly trained and assessed –adequately supported technically emotionally and educationally –recognised and rewarded when it does its job well

Workforce domain – providing cost effective care a cost effective endoscopy service depends on a workforce that –has a balanced skill mix –high levels of retention and recruitment –low levels of unplanned absence

The workforce domain of the GRS has been designed to help endoscopy services recruit, train and support its workforce in the most effective and efficient way

the workforce domain will accelerate improvements in workforce conditions by: – helping endoscopy teams identify unresolved workforce issues – providing a framework on which to plan and deliver change – providing ideas, information and examples of best practice It will ensure that all staff are : – trained – assessed – developed – cared for and – listened to www.grs.nhs.uk

Workforce domain – how does it work? The workforce domain is constructed exactly like the main GRS There are items, levels of achievement (D to A) and measures that underpin and define the levels There is a web-based reporting system Endoscopy units are encouraged to complete the domain at six monthly intervals

Endoscopy Global Rating Scale National census twice yearly (April and October) –The GRS workforce domain was launched in October 2006 –The domain was modified and improved in response to service feedback first used in its current form in the April 2007 census www.grs.nhs.uk

How does this domain complement the other GRS domains?

GRS measures quality of endoscopy services Several items in the quality and quality of patient experience domains may indicate workforce-related problems such as: long waits poor patient feedback adverse clinical incidents etc The underlying issues may be due to gaps in the workforce the wrong skill mix poor performance of individuals poor training low staff morale

The workforce domain measures these and many other issues. It will help endoscopy leads ensure the workforce provides an excellent and cost effective service enjoys its job finds it fulfilling and rewarding to come to work
