Question 1 Who was John Simpson Kirkpatrick? John Simpson Kirkpatrick - known simply as ‘Simpson’ - was a ‘Stretcher Bearer’ who is best known for his bravery on the Gallipoli battlefield. Simpson was born on July the 6 th 1892 in England but moved to Australia in 1910. On the outbreak of WWI he enlisted in the Australian Army as a way to get home to England.

Question 2 Why is there a Donkey with him? Simpson became well known on the Gallipoli battlefield for his bravery and his loyal donkey, which he used to collect and transport the wounded soldiers to the beach for evacuation to hospital ships. Simpson has worked with donkeys earlier in his life and found them to be very useful on the battlefield.

Question 3 What happened to him? Just three weeks after the landing, Simpson was killed by a Turkish bullet during one of his morning journeys up Monash Valley to retrieve wounded soldiers.

Question 5 Using these words write a description of what he did. The inspirational story of John Simpson and his donkey at Gallipoli highlighted to Australians at home the hardworking, heroic, courageous nature of our soldiers on the battlefields of Europe.

Question 6 John Simpson was a heroic figure for Australians during WWI. With his loyal donkey, he became an icon representing all that is great about Australia and what we like to think of as Australian values. Helping others, mateship, bravery under fire - these are the values John Simpson and his donkey became famous for. Australia was a new young country when it went into WWI, heroes like John Simpson helped unite Australia during hard times. Australians are rightly proud of their war heroes like John Simpson.
