Delegation Gareth Holsgrove February 2014
2
Delegation Delegation means entrusting one or more people with a task or part of a task Delegation is not ‘palming off’ all the boring or unpleasant tasks
3
Delegation Think about experiences you have had with delegation: – Tasks you have delegated – Tasks you have undertaken – Problems, outcomes, support
4
Delegation A good manager will delegate tasks: – To people who are trusted – To spread the workload – To involve more of the team
5
Delegation A good manager will ensure: – That the delegated tasks are within the person’s ability (and, if possible, their ambitions / special interests)
6
Delegation A good manager will know: – That people sometimes make mistakes – so delegated tasks are not always done properly – That mistakes can be minimised with proper support
7
Delegation A good manager will support: – By discussing the task and its implications before delegating – By keeping good contact and checking on progress and any difficulties
8
Delegation A good manager will support: – By identifying difficulties early (little problems are easier to solve than big ones) – By helping to overcome difficulties
9
Delegation A good manager will support: – By encouraging and praising – By utilising the delegated task – By acknowledging and thanking the person who undertook the task
