Try to for at least one! -to understand the main population indicators used to measure countries & places -to be able to use key terms; birth & death rates, fertility rate, infant mortality rate, life expectancy
2
Why do populations change? What ideas did you all come up with in your starter activity? The worlds population has exploded over the last century; 1800 – 1.1 billion 1850 – 1.4 billion 1900 – 1.8 billion 1950 – 2.6 billion 2000 – 6.1billion 2050 – 9.3 billion ?? How do populations grow naturally? HEALTH – control of disease, birth control, improvements in maternity care, diet, malnutrition, doctors, sexual health EDUCATION – health education, female education, empowerment, tertiary education SOCIAL PROVISION – care for elderly, influence of media, clean water supply, access to healthcare CULTURAL FACTORS – religion & birth control, Catholicism, status deranged from size of family, role of women, sexual morality
3
Total Population Natural Change Migrational Change Birth rate exceeds death rate Immigration is higher than emigration Death rate rises & exceeds birth rate A disaster or something forces many people to emigrate
4
1.Shade in the 6 inhabited continents and label on their % share of world population 2.Describe the change in distribution of world population 3.Where do you think most population issues occur and why? Can you use named examples?
5
How to describe… Is there an overall trend? Positive correlation? Negative correlation? Where do the graph lines start at? Quote figures from the graph. Where do the graph lines end at? Quote figures from the graph. Are there any areas with particularly steep rates of change? Quote from the graph. Exam hint!!
6
Global Population densities 2006 /km 2 1.What is ‘population density’? 2.Describe the world’s population density (3 marks) 3.Is there a link to development shown here? Explain your answer (6 marks)
7
How to describe… Is there an overall pattern? Are there areas clearly clustered, or is it randomly spread out? Which areas have the highest levels? Name continents, etc. Which areas have the lowest levels? Name continents, etc. Are there any exceptions, surprises? Exam hint!!

Key terms for this lesson! Birth rate Death rate Fertility rate (what’s the magic number?) Life expectancy Natural population change Infant mortality rates Chloropleth map Net migration increase / decrease Make sure all of the above words are in your notes with detailed definitions of what they mean! You need to use these regularly!

Plenary Target setting; On a piece of A4 write down; -your name -the date -at least 2 DETAILED targets that you want to achieve by the end of this course -underneath each action plan how you think you will be able to achieve these targets! -how can you achieve the most in the next 2 years? -what are YOU working for? Homework; -buy or find your self an A4 folder for my lessons -buy or find yourself some subject dividers to help you organise your notes -start watching programmes like Question Time, Horizon, documentaries etc -pick up a newspaper, preferably a broadsheet and find an article about population or health & geography! -bring it in next lesson!
