Indigenous Education Centre Highlighting Indigenous Status Placing an emphasis on local numbers of Indigenous staff and students within IEC/KI Making comparisons and links to past numbers eg IEC alone, 2010 student numbers at 341 as oppose to 312 in 2009 Demonstrating a growing presence eg up to 25 Indigenous staff employed at IEC and up to 40 Indigenous staff at KI

Indigenous Education Centre Cultural Awareness Training Develop and Deliver non threatening program which doesn’t question but equips individuals - no ‘Culture Cops’ Attach program to VET UoC eg ‘Develop an Understanding of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander culture’ - Certificate I to IV ATSI Cultural Arts Encourage students to be active throughout their ‘journey’s in learning about their individual heritage Link them with support eg students and Elders who can assist along the journey Cultural Awareness Training

We now offer 22 courses Building And Construction Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating) Business And Clerical Certificate I, II, III & IV in Business Diploma of Business Governance (Second semester) Community Services Certificate III Community Services (Youth Work) Certificate IV in Community Services (Protective Care) Teaching / Training Certificate IV in Training and Assessment Information Technology Certificate I & II in Information Technology (IT) Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning VCAL – Foundation, Intermediate & Senior Levels Visual Arts Certificate I, II, III & IV in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts (for Indigenous Australians) Music Certificate II & III in Music Horticulture Certificate II & III in Conservation and Land Management

13 Click to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level Pathway to Employment Indigenous Education Centre Teaching / Training Certificate IV in Training and Assessment IEC has employed 9 Indigenous staff since 2009 – 9 still current Building And Construction Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating) IEC has placed 6 Indigenous graduates in into apprenticeship programs (domestic sites) in 2011

14 Click to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level Pathway to Employment - Yering-Garrine Indigenous Employment Strategy Kangan Institute have in place an Indigenous Employment Strategy called Yering- Garrine (Woiwurrung word for Independent / free) is a unique strategy in a TAFE setting targeting 2% Indigenous Employment within the Institute. Kangan Institute in 2000, employed 3 Indigenous Staff…. we now employ 35 to 40 Indigenous staff working as teachers, managers, senior educators, tutors, business development officers and trainees. Our traineeship program employs 10 trainees per year and places each trainee into various departments across the Institute. The program has been a tremendous success with an overall retention rate of 85% for trainees for the past 4 years (see photo).
