How Do Convection Cells Cause the Motion of the Tectonic Plates? Convection cell
2
Convection Currents Transfer of heat in fluids (gas, liquids, molten rock) due to differences in density. The differences in density causes the fluids to create circular paths of motion. Convection currents in the Asthenosphere are responsible for the motions of the plates.
3
Rising Convection Currents in the Earth Magma Deep in the Earth is heated it becomes less dense and rises to the surface and pushes out at the center of a Mid-Ocean Ridge (Rift Valley). Plates are spread apart – creating divergent boundaries
4
Sinking Convection Currents As magma reaches the surface it cools becomes more dense and sinks. As the magma is sinking it will drag the plates with it or force the plates to collide (Converge).
