Microsoft Windows: Key Terms Desktop: the entire screen Task bar: contains the following: Start menu: a portal for all programs and documents Quick launch: miniature icons for common actions Task icons: icons to open programs and folders System tray: miniature icons indicating programs that are running in the background Icon: a small picture (with its label) representing a program, file, or action; can be moved around your desktop just as you might move papers around on your desk Mouse pointer: usually an arrow, the pointer shows you where Windows thinks the mouse is; as you move the mouse, the pointer moves. Window: An open program, folder, or document.
