2 2 ‘Origin of Gothic’ The word Gothic comes from the Goths who were a tribe of barbarians noted for their ferocity. Wikipedia says “Although many of the fighting nomads who followed them were to prove more bloody, the Goths were feared because the captives they took in battle were sacrificed to their god of war – Tyz.” The most famous old Goth was called Alaric. Later on the ancient Goths split into two parts – Visigoths and Ostrogoths which simply means Western Goths and Eastern Goths.

3 3 Gothic Script This involves a style of writing. The Gothic alphabet was invented around middle the 4th century AD by Bishop Wulfila (311-383 AD), the religious leader of the Visigoths, to provide his people with a written language and a means of reading his translation of the Bible. There are a variety of different forms of Gothic Script available in Word Documents. 4 4 An Introduction to Gothic Architecture This involves a style of architecture particularly associated with late medieval cathederals and churches. At first the word Gothic was an insult. The style was revived in 18th and 19th centuries and used in all sorts of buildings, largely for churches and university buildings. Gothic buildings were often dark, cold and forbidding and became associated with famous horror figures.
