ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA COM 3º CICLO ROMEU CORREIA The Portuguese educational system covers : pre-school education, school education, including basic, secondary and higher education, and extracurricular education. There are also two special types of schooling: recurrent (second-chance learning) and vocational training

ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA COM 3º CICLO ROMEU CORREIA Pre-school education: – For children between the age of 3 and the start of basic education (6 years); -attendance is optional; The aim is to stimulate the capacities of children and to encourage their development.

Basic education: – It is universal, compulsory and free of charge and directed to children between the ages of 6 and 18; – It lasts for 9 years and is spread over 3 cycles: 1st cycle, lasting for 4 years, 2nd cycle, lasting for 2 years, and 3rd cycle lasting for 3 years; Provides general common instruction ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA COM 3º CICLO ROMEU CORREIA

Secondary education: – For pupils who have completed basic education; -It lasts for 3 years; – Secondary regular education is arranged into: – General courses, designed mainly for pupils who want secondary level instruction, with a view to pursuing higher education studies; – Professional courses, designed mainly for pupils who want an intermediate level vocational qualification that will give access to the labour market; – It leads to a diploma of secondary education and, in the case of professional courses, to a level 3 vocational qualification.

ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA COM 3º CICLO ROMEU CORREIA Courses in specialized artistic education are administered in secondary education with the objective of providing artistic training for the pursuit of studies and vocational preparation in the visual arts, dance and music, and encouraging individual and group artistic practices.

Recurrent basic and secondary education Recurrent (second-chance) education is a special type of schooling which is available for those who did not complete basic or secondary education at the usual age of attendance (up to age 18). Recurrent education has the same objectives and leads to the same diploma as regular education, although it adopts plans and methods appropriate for its target users.

ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA COM 3º CICLO ROMEU CORREIA General courses and technical courses are provided in recurrent secondary education in several fields. Professional courses, apart from the diploma of secondary education, also lead to a level 3 vocational qualification.

ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA COM 3º CICLO ROMEU CORREIA Post-secondary, non-higher education known as technological specialization courses are taught in vocational training, mainly to those who have the diploma of secondary education and a level 3 vocational qualification and who want to acquire more scientific and technological knowledge in the field of their basic vocational training. These courses also develop personal and professional skills appropriate for working in the vocational qualification chosen by the student.

Access Access to higher education is subject to number restrictions (numerus clausus) and admission is by competition. Students who hold a diploma of secondary education or the equivalent may apply and must meet all the demands laid down by law, particularly exams in specific subjects in which minimum marks must be obtained.
