Acids and Bases

Objectives 1.I.D. the physical and chemical properties of acids and bases 2.Classify a solution as acidic, basic or neutral. 3.Explain the meaning of pH and pOH

Properties of Bases Taste bitter and slippery (think a bar of soap)

Properties acidic solutions Taste sour Examples of common acids: Carbonic acid in soft drinks Stomach acid (HCl) Hydrochloric acid

One more property of acids Corrosive: is the disintegration of an engineered material into its constituent atoms due to chemical reaction

Chemical properties of acids Acids can be I.D. with reactions with some metals Ex. Zinc and Hydrochloric acid Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq)  ZnCl 2 + H 2 (g)

Ions in solution Why are some aqeous solutions acidic, some are basic and some are neutral?(neither acidic nor basic) All aqeous solutions contain hydrogen ions (H+) and (OH-). The relative amounts determine if a solution is acidic, basic or neutral

What are acidic and basic solutions? An Acidic solution contains more hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions Basic solutions contain more hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions Neutral solutions contain the same amount of each ions

What is an acid? Water it self is neutral and self ionize H 2 O (l)  H + (aq) + OH - (aq) Acid is a substance that contains hydrogen ion and ionizes to produce hydrogen ions in aqueous solutions Ex. HCl (g)  H + (aq) + Cl - (aq)

What is a base? A base is a substance that contains a hydroxide group and dissociates to produce hydroxide ion in aqueous solutions. NaOH (s)  Na + (aq) + OH - (aq)
