Properties of Acids and Bases Chapter 6

Acids, Bases, and pH 1. When a water molecule is separated, it separates into two ions 2. Ions are slightly charged particles 3. Water splits into a Hydrogen Ion (H+) and Hydroxide Ion (OH)- 4. Acid= lots of hydrogen ions (H+) 5. Base= lots of hydroxide ions (OH)-

6. pH scale runs from 0 to 14 7. 7= perfectly neutral 8. Pure water= 7 9. Tap water has ions in it (chlorine kills germs and fluorine is good for our teeth) 10. Acid= less than 7 on the pH scale 11. Base= greater than 7 on the pH scale

ACIDS 1. Sour 2. Corrosive 3. Acidic solutions can conduct electricity. 4. Examples of Common Products: lemon juice, soda, vinegar

BASES 1. Bitter 2. Slippery 3. Basic solutions can also conduct electricity. 4. Many cleaning solutions are bases.

Neutralizing Acids 1. 1.Acids can be weakened by diluting them with water. 2. 2.To neutralize an acid, bases are sometimes used. 3. 3.Example- heartburn is caused by too much stomach acid. Antacids are used to neutralize the acidity and relieve the heartburn.
