2 THE LANDWEBER CONNECTIVITY MAP  A Map earlier used to indicate the state of connectivity of each country to the Internet.  -------------------------------------------------------------------  *Nigeria appeared continuously on the map has having UUCP connection to the Internet until 1996 when the first IP connection to the Internet was setup in the country.  *Landwebber Map was discontinued when almost all countries got IP link to the Internet.

3 Mosaic Group Internet Diffusion Framework  1.) Geographical Dispersion.  2.) Sectoral Absorption  3.) Connectivity Infrastructure.  4.) Organisational Infrastructure.  5.) Sophistication of Use.  6.) Pervasiveness

4 GEOGRAPHIC DISPERSION The concentration of the Internet within a nation from a single city to nationwide availability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Internet Points of Presence now available in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Bauchi, Kano and Ibadan Dial up users available in most cities and towns. NIPOST is providing email services in 13 states Cybercafes are springing up on daily basis and available in most cities.

5 SECTORAL ABSORPTION The degree of utilization of the Internet in various sectors of the economy such as education, business, health care and public sectors. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * Almost all sectors have at least one establishment having access to the Internet. Mostly by dial up. Few of them have set up their website. *Projects: NUNet, POLYnet, TEACHnet, Healthnet Only 402 domains registered under the.ng TLD

6 CONNECTIVITY INFRASTRUCTURE A measure based on the International and Intra- national backbone bandwidth, exchange point and last mile access methods --------------------------------------------------------------------- International Backbone – 6.5 mbps National Backbone – 2 mbps Built by NITEL Exchange Point – None Last mile – ADSL, Wireless (ISM band and MMDS)

7 ORGANISATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE A measure based on state of the ISP industry and market conditions. ----------------------------------------------------- 136 ISP licensed, 30 operating Nigeria Internet Group Internet Service Provider Association (ISPAN) Internet Society (ISOC)

8 SOPHISTICATION OF USE A measure characterising usage from conventional to highly sophisticated and driving innovation. _________________________________ Usage generally limited to convectional use like email, web browsing. Websites are generally static except for a few sites like The Guardian site (www.ngrguardiannews.com), www.ncc.gov.ngwww.ngrguardiannews.com Sophisticated usage like real audio, webcast, e- commerce yet to be a common practice.

9 SUMMARY There is a great improvement in Internet diffusion within the last one year The Policy environment is getting better. NITEL is becoming more cooperative. E1 is now being approved for ISPs. Awareness is growing. Licensing for cybercafe by NCC is no more required. Enthusiasm about Internet is growing and Nigeria is poised to take it’s rightful place on the Internet.
