1 Solutions, Solvents & Solutes
L/O :- To understand the terms solution, solute, soluble, insoluble, dissolve and solvent

2 How could you test your ideas?
Can you identify water??? Look at the different liquids – try to identify which is a) water b) ethanol c) sugar water d) brine How could you test your ideas?

3 Does the salt disappear? Would this happen with sand?
What happens when you put salt with water? Use your knowledge of PARTICLES to explain what happens when salt is added to water (Don’t forget the use as many scientific words as you can) Solution Soluble Is the water still ‘pure’? Insoluble Dissolve

4 A “Particle Theory” explanation
Before After 100 g 105 g

5 Pure?! Even though the water still looks ‘pure’, this term is wrong. Pure would mean there were only water particles, however we now have water particles + sugar particles! The sugar has not disappeared - instead it has dissolved in the water We would call the water + sugar a solution A solid dissolved in a liquid makes a solution In a solution the liquid is called the solvent, and the solid is called the solute Solute Solvent Solution

6 Solution - the mixture formed when a substance dissolves in it
Solute Solvent Solution Solution - the mixture formed when a substance dissolves in it Solute - the substance that dissolves Solvent - the liquid in the solution Dissolve - mixing of a substance in a liquid Soluble - a substance which can dissolve (mix in a liquid) Insoluble - a substance which cannot dissolve (mix in a liquid)

7 How can you tell if something is soluble?
This is a solution because it is transparent (see through) even though it is coloured This is not a solution because the solid has not dissolved and has settled at the bottom This is not a solution because it is not transparent. This is milk and the fat has not dissolved in the liquid

8 How can you separate sand and water?
How could you get the pure sand back from a sand and salt mixture? How do you think this works? Sand and water

9 Would this work with salty water
The sand particles are too big to pass through the filter paper with the water particles Would this work with salty water

10 The filter paper can easily catch the insoluble sand
Particle Model Look at the particle model The insoluble sand is easy to catch with the filter paper But this is not so, for the well mixed salt The filter paper can easily catch the insoluble sand The filter paper cannot catch the soluble salt, as the particles are too well mixed

11 Unscramble the words! If lots of different things are jumbled up together, we have a txmireu. If you mix lats with water then the grains seem to disappear. This is because the grains have split up and mixed with the water. They have ssvldeoied. A substance that slsvoeisd is said to be bleluso. A solid dissolved in liquid makes a situonlo. In a situonlo the liquid is called the slvento, and the solid is called the etulos. A solid that does not dissolve in a liquid is called eslinubo. If a solid has completely dissolved in a liquid, then the ioslutn is always rnsentaprat (see-through), even if it has a colour.

13 Homework Learn the terms for a test next lesson!!!
