BUILDING STRONG ® Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory Our PURPOSE: To solve interdisciplinary, strategically important problems on behalf of the nation in all seasons and climates, while maintaining unique core competencies related to the Earth’s cold regions Our PEOPLE: More than 200 engineers, scientists, technicians, and administrative support personnel in five areas: Terrestrial and Cryospheric Sciences, Signature Physics, Remote Sensing/GIS and Water Resources, Force Projection and Sustainment, and Biogeochemical Sciences Our PRODUCTS: Military Terrestrial Science and Phenomenology – geospatial technologies for understanding land cover and terrain state condition effects on operations; predicting the operational limits of sensors and emitters in the environment Polar Science and Engineering – multidisciplinary approach to the observation, understanding and prediction of change leading to engineering solutions for polar operations, logistics and research Snow and Ice in Temperate and Mountainous Regions – providing snow condition assessments for US forces and the state of snow-packs in the major watersheds of the world for water resource planning Biogeochemical Sciences – innovative research for obtaining battlespace awareness, enhancing force protection and ensuring training sustainability
