Chapter 7.1~ Life is Cellular Pages 169-172
2
Important “Cellular” Scientists Robert Hooke- 1665 Constructed one of the first light microscopes Looked at dead cork cells Coined the term “cell” because of their appearance
3
Important “Cellular” Scientists Anton van Leeuwenhoek- 1674 Mastered technique of creating lenses Observed living organisms with improved light microscope
4
Important “Cellular” Scientists Matthias Schleiden- 1838 Concludes all plants are made of cells Theodor Schwann- 1839 Concludes all animals are made of cells Rudolph Virchow- 1855 Proposes all cells come from pre- existing cells
5
Cell Theory Schledien, Schwann, and Virchow’s observations laid the foundations for the cell theory. The Cell Theory states: All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. New cells are produced from existing cells.
6
Important “Cellular” Scientists Janet Plowe- 1931 Demonstrates the cell membrane is a physical structure Helps develop understanding of cell structures Lynn Margulis- 1970 Proposes theory of endosymbiosis Helps develop understanding of cell structures
7
Basic Cell Structures Cell Membrane- Thin, flexible barrier around cell Separates the “outside” from the “inside” Cell Wall- Thick, inflexible barrier around cell Surrounds the Cell Membrane
8
Basic Cell Structures Cytosol- Liquid material inside cell Organelle- Specialized structure within cell Cytoplasm- Cytosol plus organelles
9
Basic Cell Structures Nucleus- Internal structure containing cell’s genetic material
10
Prokaryotic versus Eukaryotic Pro- “Before” Eu- “True” -kary- “Nucleus” Prokaryotic = Before Nucleus Eukaryotic = True Nucleus
