1 10/14

2 Main Idea: “Nameless, Tennessee”
What is the general impression that William Least Heat Moon conveys about Nameless, Tennessee? How does he use characterization to develop that impression?

3 Features of a Good Summary
The first sentence should contain the title of the essay and the writer’s name. The first sentence should also capture the main idea. (The main idea should be a statement, not a noun or noun with several modifiers.) The next sentence should tell HOW the writer develops the main idea (his/her main strategy). Use one of the following prepositions: by, with, or through. You should then identify and briefly describe three “moves” the writer makes in the essay. Think about how the essay’s “sections,” not the small details. End by identifying the extent to which you thought the essay was interesting, and explain your answer.

4 Journal: “Nameless, Tennessee”
Every place has its own “flavor.” Think about your town or neighborhood. How would you describe it to someone who has never been there before? Write a word passage that captures the spirit of the place.
