Sentences All sentences have at least two parts The ice melts. Subject (who the sentence is about) Predicate (beginning with a verb). Subject + Predicate = A clause.

SIMPLE SENTENCES Simple sentences are made up of only 1 clause. The ice melts. Subject (who the sentence is about) Predicate (beginning with a verb). This is a clause because it contains a subject and a predicate.

COMPOUND SENTENCES Compound sentences are made up of two clauses joined by a conjunction. The ice melts and the waters rise Subject Predicate A conjunction Subject Predicate

COMPLEX Sentences Complex sentences have 2 clauses, but one is dependent and one is independent. Although the ice melts, life goes on. Subject Predicate This is the dependent clause. Subject Predicate

BUILDING Sentences This is a simple sentence: This is also a simple sentence: This is a compound sentence: Australia is a rich country. It has many poor people. Australia is a rich country but it has many poor people. This is a complex sentence: Although Australia is a rich country, it has many poor people.
