CURATIVE MEASURES
2
CHEMICAL DETERIORATION
3
DEACIDIFICATION THE MAIN MEASURE IS DEACIDIFICATION Two types: Wet or Aqueous Deacidification Non-Aqueous Deacidification
4
AQUEOUS Uses solution of calcium and magnesium bicarbonate. Note: Document must first be sealed using Calatan CB dissolved in methylated spirit. Because the process uses water.
5
NON-AQUEOUS Solvent Method. Uses organic solvent eg. Methylated spirit to dissolve the Calcium and Magnesium carbonate. No water is involved. Solution is brushed or sprayed on documents.
6
Vapour Phase Method. A dry method which makes use of alkaline paste called Cyclohexylamine Carbonate. Neutralization takes place after 20hrs. Non Aqueous Continued…
7
Gaseous Method. This is a Mass Deacidification process. It makes use of liquefied Amonia gas. Acid neutralization takes place after 36hrs. Non Aqueous Continued…
8
BIOLOGICAL DETERIORATION The main curative measure is Fumigation.
9
TYPES OF FUMIGANTS Fungicides; o eg. Thymol, Fomaldehyde Insecticides; o eg. Paradiclhorobenzene Rodenticides; o eg. Cynide dust
10
PHYSICAL DETERIORATION The main curative measures are: Lamination/Backing Encapsulation Leaf casting Library Binding Stain Removal
11
When all fail, then: Photocopying Microfilming Digitizing
