Inquiry 2.2 – How is Light Produced?

Examining the Flashlight A. Exactly where does the flashlight release its light? Light is released in the light bulb of the flashlight, more specifically, at the filament. ADD TO WORDS TO WORK ON RIGHT NOW

Examining the Flashlight B. Where does this light come from? Light is produced from electrical energy in the filament of the light bulb.

Examining the Flashlight C. Where does the light go? The light leaves the flashlight.

Examining the Flashlight D. Is anything produced in addition to light? The light bulb produces a small amount of heat in addition to light.

Examining the Flashlight E. Try to explain how the flashlight makes light.

Examining the Match and Candle A. What was produced when you struck the match? Energy in the form of light, heat, and sound were produced by the match. Smoke was also produced but it is not a form of energy.

Examining the Match and Candle B. Where did it come from? The head and the stick of the match contain chemical energy. When the match is struck, friction turns these chemicals into fire. How do matches work?

Examining the Match and Candle C. How does the candle make light? Chemical potential energy in the wax is transformed into light as the candle burns.

Examining the Match and Candle D. Is anything else produced in addition to light? Heat and smoke are produced in addition to light.

Examining the Match and Candle E. What happens to the candle as it makes light? The candle decreases in mass as the wax is burned.
