1 Emergency Medicine Competency Assessment of Patient Satisfaction (EMCAPS) Worley E, Shankar M, Perry K, Straff D, Sperling J, Carter W, Tanouye R New York Presbyterian Hospital, University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell Introduction Pilot Study Concept and Design EMCAPS Concept: Create point-of-care patient satisfaction assessment focused on EM resident care. Anonymous 16 or 17 question survey 5 point Likert scale Assess 4 ACGME Core Competencies: patient care, interpersonal/communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice Inclusion Criteria: Seen by ONE EM resident + stable, English speaking, with capacity and able to give informed consent The RA executes the survey at bedside, without the resident’s knowledge, and then results are synced with the online platform polldaddy.com. Goal of 10 surveys per resident before reporting scores back to the resident. Two month pilot study: July-August 2014 93 patients approached 51 admitted 42 discharged 68 (73%) patients completed the survey 35/51 (69%) admitted 33/42 (79%) discharged Patient satisfaction scores are now an important part of how physicians are evaluated, both externally by the public and internally. This data is often fathered weeks after the Emergency Department encounter, and focused on the attending or general experience. As residents are not included in this assessment, efforts to incorporate this into residency curriculum and the resident learning experience have been slow. Often, the first exposure to patient satisfaction scores comes when a physician is already an attending, and when financial consequences are already attached to scores. To fill this void, we developed Emergency Medicine Competency Assessment of Patient Satisfaction (EMCAPS): a point of care patient satisfaction tool focused on the EM resident.

2 Emergency Medicine Competency Assessment of Patient Satisfaction (EMCAPS Worley E, Shankar M, Perry K, Straff D, Sperling J, Carter W, Tanouye R New York Presbyterian Hospital, University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell Current Protocol 1.Pick up iPad, print out status board and find resident schedule. 2.For each area, identify patients who are survey eligible. a)Must be either ready for discharge, bed requested or admit aware b)Status timer <12 hours c)Prioritize discharged patients first and see them quickly. 3.Identify the EM resident(s) who were in that area at that time. These are the residents who most likely admitted the patient. 4.Check with the nurse regarding patient status and location. Patient must speak/understand written English, and be able to consent. Patients going to the ICU or the Step Down Unit are not eligible. 5.Approach the patient, introduce yourself and consent. Ask patient if Resident A or Resident B was their doctor, using the pictures. 6.Repeat process half way through shift with newly printed status board. 7.Sync the iPad and return to the locker. Using the website polldaddy.com, we are able to monitor progress and collect survey results in real time.
