UNIT 14: INSTALLING & MAINTAINING COMPUTER HARDWARE
2
FROM THIS UNIT THE LEARNER WILL:
A understand the benefits and implications of installing and maintaining hardware in technology systems B plan installation and maintenance of hardware in a technology system C install, maintain and test hardware in a technology system D review the modified technology system.
3
Assignments: A1 – Investigation: Prepare a presentation or a report for the ‘client’. (P1 M1 D1) Assignment 2 – Planning: Your task is to plan the installation and maintenance of hardware to fulfil the user requirements for the ‘client’. (P2, P3, M2, D2) Assignment 3 - Repair and Upgrade: Practical application, you must demonstrate that you can follow your plan (P4, P5, M3, M4, D3)
4
Assignments: Assignment 4 – Review: Prepare a presentation or a report for the ‘client’ to evaluate the modified technology system, explaining why and how it meets the brief (P6, M5, D4)

LEARNING AIM A: UNDERSTAND THE BENEFITS AND
IMPLICATIONS OF INSTALLING AND MAINTAINING HARDWARE IN TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS

Learning Aim A Computer hardware
Internal External Reasons to maintain technology systems Benefits and implications of installing and maintaining hardware

Learning Aim A Computer hardware
Internal External Demonstration of good and bad research work! The work you submit today will be marked by your peers If you wish it to remain anonymous do not include your name in the title of the work, - e.g. Joe Blogg’s work on Hardware or in the text.

Learning Aim A What hardware can you think of?
Compile two lists – one showing components which are internal e.g. processor the other showing external hardware e.g. printer There should be at least 6 items in each list. Give a brief description of each component/device that you have listed: What does it do? Who are the major manufacturers? What does it connect with?/How does it connect? Provide a picture. You have 1 hour to complete this task. Make sure that the folder is shared with me.
9
Peer Review Part 1 For the paper you have been assigned to review:
Are there two lists? – If so Leave a Comment How many components/devices are there on each list? Leave a Comment Less than 6 on either list – If so Leave a Comment 6 on each list – If so Leave a Comment More than 6 on either list and at least 6 on the other – 2 If so Leave a Comment
10
Peer Review Part 2 What it does is not described or is described but not in the students own words – If so Leave a Comment What it does is adequately described– If so Leave a Comment What it does is very well described - If so Leave a Comment None of the major manufacturers are listed - If so Leave a Comment One major manufacturer is listed – If so Leave a Comment More than one major manufacturer is listed - If so Leave a Comment
11
Peer Review Part 2 Connections are not described or are described but not in the students own words – If so Leave a Comment Connections are adequately described – If so Leave a Comment Connections are very well described - If so Leave a Comment A picture is not provided – If so Leave a Comment A picture is provided and attributed – If so Leave a Comment A picture is provided, attributed and captioned -If so Leave a Comment

REASONS TO MAINTAIN TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS
Know why we maintain technology systems, e.g.: to prevent faults occurring and/or to repair faults Routine Maintainence to upgrade internal components, e.g. processor, memory and/or storage, to improve performance to upgrade external hardware devices to improve performance to change system functionality, e.g. to network the technology system or allow printing/scanning.

This may be because of a change in the system, i.e. a new software installation
