2 + PARCC ELA Unlike Standardized Test of the past, PARCC is broken up into two sections - PBA (Performance Based Assessment) March 16, 17, & 18 2015 - EOY (End of Year Assessment) May 2015

3 + What’s on the Performance Based Assessment? The Performance Based Assessment focuses on writing skills which are broken up into three sections: - Literary Analysis Task - Research Simulation Task - Narrative Task The Performance Based Assessment has a total of 93 points (48 Reading and 45 Writing) Each section is timed!! Students will be allowed to write in the test booklet, use highlighters and will be given scratch paper.

4 + Performance Based Assessment: Literary Analysis Task The Literature Analysis section of PARCC requires students to compare and contrast two pieces of literature that deal with a common theme while testing students’ ability to read complex text closely. This section also asks students to carefully consider literature worthy of close study and compose an analytic essay.

5 + Performance Based Assessment: Literary Analysis Task For the Literary Analysis Task you will have to analyze two short text (400-600 words) and one extended text (600-1000 works) then respond to a writing prompt that relates to each text. The Literary Analysis is worth a total of 16 Reading points and 15 Writing points. (31 Total) Students will only have 75 minutes to complete this section

6 + Performance Based Assessment: Literary Analysis Task The Literary Analysis Task is broken up and scored in four separate sections: Reading Literature Reading Vocabulary Writing Knowledge Language and Conventions Writing Written Expressions

7 + Literary Analysis Task: Reading Literature This section is worth (8 Reading points) and (4 Writing points) Standards RL 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 - Contributions of theme, plot, or setting to the overall meanings of the story - Central idea of literature - Analysis of plot and themes - Comparing themes and topics - Comparing a print text to a multimedia versions of that text - Point of view of a narrator or speaker

8 + Literary Analysis Task: Reading Vocabulary This section is worth (4 Reading points) Standards L 1, 2, 3, 6 - Ensure correct pronoun usage - Command of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. - Utilize varying sentence patterns for meaning, reader interest, style, and tone - Understanding authors word choice and word significances in text

9 + Literary Analysis Task: Written Expression This section is worth (12 Writing points) Standards: W 1 and/or W 2; W 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 - Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the organization and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience

10 + Literary Analysis Task: Written Expression Standards (continued) - Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others - Conduct short research projects to answer a question - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data - Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research

22 + Performance Based Assessment: Research Simulation In this section students will analyze an instructional topic presented through several articles or multimedia stimuli, the first text being an anchor (primary) text that introduces the topic. After analyzing all of the compiled information on the topic in this section, students will answering a series of questions and write two analytic essays that combines information from multiple sources.

23 + Performance Based Assessment: Research Simulation The Research Simulation section is worth a total of 22 Reading points and 15 Writing points. (37 Total) Students will only have 90 minutes to complete this section The information in this section consist of three short text and one extended text, all of which will consist of Informational Text There are four parts to the Research Simulation section: - Reading Information - Reading Vocabulary - Writing Written Expression - Writing Knowledge Language and Conventions

24 + Research Simulation: Reading Information This section is worth (12 Reading points) and (4 Writing points) Standards: RI 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 - Focus on point of view and purpose - Use of illustrations and other visuals - Analysis of argument - Relationship of ideas - Analysis of primary and secondary sources - Comparison of information gained from various sources

25 + Research Simulation: Reading Vocabulary This section is worth (6 Reading Points) Standards: L 4, 5, 6 and RI 4 (Any combination) - Ensure correct pronoun usage - Command of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. - Utilize varying sentence patterns for meaning, reader interest, style, and tone - Understanding authors word choice and word significances in text - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text (including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings)

26 + Research Simulation: Writing Written Expression This section is worth (12 Writing points) Standards: W 1 and/or W 2 (Primary Focus). W 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 - Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience

35 + Performance Based Assessment: Narrative Writing The Narrative Writing section of the PBA is used to measure students’ ability to convey experiences or events, real or imaginary. Tasks in this section may ask students to write a story, detail a scientific process, write a historical account of important figures, or to describe an account of events, scenes or objects. For this section of the PBA students will have to read one short text, then create a narrative essay.

36 + Performance Based Assessment: Narrative Writing The Narrative Writing Assessment is worth a total of 10 Reading points and 15 Writing points. (25 Total) Students will only have 60 minutes to complete this section The Narrative Writing Task is broken up and scored in three separate sections: - Reading - Writing Written Expression - Writing Knowledge Language and Conventions

37 + Narrative Writing: Reading This section is worth (10 Reading points) Standards: Narrative Story: RL standards 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 (Any combination). Narrative description: RI standards 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 (Any combination) - Cite textual evidence to support analysis - Determine a theme or central idea of a text - Describe how plot unfolds, identify character change and development - Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot

38 + Narrative Writing: Reading Standards (continued) - Compare and contrast the experience of reading a text to listening to or viewing a text - Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (a story to a poem)
