CHILD ABUSE By: Kaleigh & Jordan

MYTH 1: Its only abuse if it’s violent. FACT: There is more than one type of child abuse. Others such as neglect and emotional abuse can be just as damaging and because they are more subtle, others are less likely to intervene.

MYTH 2: Only bad people abuse their children FACT: Not all abusers are intentionally harming their children, some were abused themselves and don’t know any other way to parent. Others may be struggling with mental health issues or a substance abuse problem. Child abuse doesn’t only happen in poor families or bad neighborhoods. Sometimes families who seem to have it all on the outside are hiding a different story behind closed doors.

MYTH 3: Most child abusers are strangers. FACT: Abuse by strangers does happen but most abusers are family members or others close to the family.

Emotional Constant belittling, shaming, and humiliating a child Calling names and making negative comparisons to others Telling a child they are worthless Frequent yelling, threatening, or bullying Exposing child to violence or the abuse of others (parent, sibling, or pet)

Neglect Failing to provide for a child’s basic needs (adequate food, clothing, hygiene, or supervision) Ignoring or rejecting a child Limited physical contact with the child– no hugs, kisses, or other signs of affection

Physical Physical harm or injury to the child Not always deliberate Severe discipline (using a belt)

Sexual A statutory offense that provides that it is a crime to knowingly cause another person to engage in an unwanted sexual act by force or threat Not always physical contact Exposing a child to sexual situations or material

Statistics 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds More than four children die every day as a result of child abuse More than 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way
