Year 1 Phonic Screening Check 2016

What is the Phonic Screening Check?  A short test that is usually taken by all Year 1 children in June  Checks their ability to read phonetically decodable words, including ‘alien’ or nonsense words  There are no ‘tricky’ words

What does the test look like?  20 real words and 20 ‘alien’ words  Nonsense words have an alien picture  Words become progressively harder  Usually finishes with some 2 syllable words

What phonic knowledge does my child need?  Phase 3 – Simple digraphs such as ‘ai’ ‘er’, ‘ear’  Phase 4 – Consonant clusters such as cl, str, nk, lp  Phase 5 – Alternative spellings for the Ph3 digraphs - sound ‘families’ e.g. ai / ay / a_e or / aw / au / ore  Phase 5 new consonant digraphs – wh and ph Words in the screener may use a combination of these.

How is the screener assessed?  Scored out of 40 but schools are not told the pass mark!  In past screeners the threshold mark was 32  The data is reported to county and to parents at the end of the year

What if my child does not meet the threshold mark?  Children do develop at different rates and some will not yet be at the appropriate level  The test does not really tell us anything we do not already know!  If children do not meet the threshold, they will continue to receive support in Year 2 and will re-sit the screener

How are you supporting my child at school?  All children have a 25 minute phonic session everyday, tailored to their level  Some children receive additional small group or 1:1 support  Guided/individual reading using phonically decodable books  Focus on phonics for writing  Phonic games and challenges

How can I support my child at home? As with all areas of the curriculum, children need regular practice to develop their skills  Read regularly at least 4x week  Use Bug Club as a resource as all of these texts are phonically based  Use website such as www.phonicsplay.co.ukwww.phonicsplay.co.uk  Complete any phonic challenge home work
