4 LESSON: SUMMARIZING TEXTS DEFINITION DEFINITION: To write a summary of a passage is to reduce it to its main idea and key supporting facts. The purpose of writing a summary is to be able to accurately answer questions about the text later and to make inferences about its implied meanings.
