3 Objectives SWBAT: explain main goal of Color Field artists. SWBAT: identify 4 artists from the Color Field period.

4 Color Field Time: 1950s-Present Location: America Main goal: These artist wanted to show the beauty of color in its most simple state. Their work was impersonal and non-emotional. Two styles: – Hard Edge Painting – Stain Painting

5 Primed and Unprimed Demonstration Teacher will paint two surfaces, one primed and one unprimed, and show students how the color absorbs differently on each surface.

9 Morris Louis Poured thin paint over an un- primed canvas to let the colors interact (Stain Painting) "Saf," by Morris Louis (1959) Lived in Washington DC and was a part of the Washington Color School

10 Mark Rothko Born in Russia and immigrated to Portland, Oregon Good at all subject in school, did not study art until he was midway through college Got into theater and later would refer to his paintings as “drama” and his forms as “performers”

17 Barnett Newman Born in New York City Would use a narrow band he called a “zip” to make an visual impact Used pure vibrant colors Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue IV (1969-1970)
