Upper-Intermediate ----- Analyzing a Company’s Annual Report Warm up: Opening chat--- 5 minutes Review previous lesson’s content ---5 minutes Check if your student has completed self-study of the lesson. The class activities are designed to help them practice the language from the lesson. Thus, it’s extremely important that they go over different sections of the lesson before class.

Class Activities: (30-35 minutes) Objective: In today’s lesson, we look at some great words and phrases to help you read a company’s annual report. You will be able to use what you learn today to help you make educated decisions about your investments in the future! Class Activities

Dialogue Comprehension--- 5 minutes Although the figures sound impressive, why were analysts disappointed with Apple’s 2012 Annual Report? Did they pay dividends to shareholders this year? If so, how much? What was the significance of Asia for Apple in 2012? What are some of the doubts felt about Apple’s future success? Apple is considered one of the most profitable company’s in the world. What does their high market cap mean in regards to that?

Key Vocabulary ---- 5 minutes Underwhelming Stock Performance Robust Net sales Fiscal Years Product Portfolio Everyone was expecting this year to be outstanding and, honestly, it was quite ______________ and disappointing. Analysts are comparing the numbers from the last 2 ____________ to see if the company is successfully growing. Apple has a very impressive ___________________. They have a small variety of products offered, but each has incredible success. ABC Company’s _______________ has risen more than 20% in the past 5 months! They are forecasting a _____________ economy in America over the next few years as the job market strengthens and stocks continue to rise. In 2012, our _________________ exceeded 10 billion dollars!

Language Focus ---- 10 minutes #1: jump / jumping = in the dialogue, it is used in two different ways, once as a noun and once as a verb. To jump – to rise or increase suddenly and/or quickly, as in amount, price, etc. A jump – a sudden or quick increase or rise Examples: The jump in corn prices is already affecting the costs of food. Costs jumped again this quarter.

Language Focus #2: phenomenal = highly extraordinary, exceptional Examples: I can make phenomenal pancakes for our breakfast in the morning. The demand for business education has certainly grown at a phenomenal rate. #3: passing = In the dialogue, this is used as a noun. However, it can also be a verb. To pass (away) = to die Note: the “away” part of the verb is optional and means the same with or without it. Passing = death

9 These documents are private and confidential. Please do not distribute. Grammar Focus ---- 5 minutes Review today’s grammar focus together. The use of “let alone” can be quite confusing, even for native English speakers! Remember that in a sentence with "let alone," you give the lesser (smaller) example of something first, followed by "let alone" and then the greater (bigger) example. Where is the example of today’s grammar rule in the dialogue? Explain how this sentence follows today’s rule. There are several examples given in the grammar tab. Ask for 3 more examples using this rule.

Encourage the student on where he/she did well; give feedback to where he/she needs to pay more attention. * Assign homework, i.e. the ‘Exercise’ part of today’s lesson. Student should complete it and submit it online. They will see an automatic score. * Have them listen to the dialogue again and see if their understanding has improved. * Remind students that they can save different vocabulary terms in the app or online and review them as flashcards. * Tell the student what the next lesson is.
