Basic Structures of a Flowering Plant Roots:The plant part that grows underground secures the plant in place absorbs water and minerals from soil acts as a storage organ to store food. Stems:The structure of a plant that provides support to the plant and carries water and nutrients throughout the plant through the Xylem
2
Basic Structures of a Flowering Plant Leaves: A usually green, flattened, lateral structure attached to a stem Function: organ for photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration. Stomata – opening in leaves that allow gases and water to enter and exit the plant. Fruit: A structure of a flowering plant that forms seeds inside or on its surface provide nutrients to the seeds tempt animals to eat them so the seeds will be carried away to new areas.
3
Basic Structures of a Flowering Plant Seeds: The small structures of a plant that allow a plant to spread to new areas grow into new plants once it gets into the soil. Flowers: The structure of a flowering plant that allows it to reproduce through pollination and seed production.
4
Basic Structures of Flowering Plants What role do they play in survival, reproduction, and defense of plants: Roots? Support and storage (D&S) Stems? Support and transport H2O (D&S) Fruit? Reproduction Flowers? Reproduction Seeds? Reproduction Leaves? Survival - Photosynthesis, Respiration and Transpiration.

6
Plant Reproduction – Structures of a Flower Flowers function in reproduction through the process of pollination and seed production. Flower have both male and female reproductive structures.
7
Plant Reproductive Structures Male Structures: Stamen:The male reproductive parts of a flower which include the Anther and the filament. Anther: The part of the stamen which produces and contains the pollen. Filament: the structure that holds and supports the Anther.
8
Plant Reproductive Structures Female Structures: Pistil:The female structures of a flowering plant that contain the stigma, style, ovary, and ovule. Stigma:The top part/opening of the pistil that receives pollen for germination. Style:The tube of the pistil that carries pollen to the ovary.
9
Plant Reproductive Structures Female Structures: Ovary: The enlarged portion of the pistil that produces the ovules and matures into a fruit Ovule:The egg of a flowering plant that is fertilized by pollen and matures into a seed.
